Dr Esther Calbo reflects on healthcare conflict management at ECCMID Global 2025 in Vienna
The director of the department of Medicine at UIC Barcelona and head of the Infectious Diseases Unit at the Hospital Universitari Mútua Terrassa took part as an invited expert at the leading international event on infectious diseases.
From 27 to 30 April, Dr Esther Calbo, director of the Department of Medicine and dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at UIC Barcelona, took part in ECCMID Global 2025 (European Congress of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases), held in Vienna. The congress is one of the world’s most significant scientific gatherings in the field of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology, bringing together over 18,000 healthcare professionals.
During the event, Dr Calbo was a speaker in the Meet-the-Expert session titled “How to Master Conflict Management and Negotiation in Healthcare.” In her presentation, she addressed the need to develop skills for managing and negotiating conflict in complex healthcare settings, focusing on three key pillars: the importance of understanding the interests of the parties involved, offering legitimate options, and building strong professional relationships.
“Clinical practice involves making difficult decisions, handling intense emotions, and managing constant pressure. Conflict is not the exception – it is part of the job. That’s why it’s essential to align values and foster shared growth among the various players in the healthcare field,” she noted.
The session offered participants the chance to share useful methodologies for managing conflict in healthcare and to gain practical skills and knowledge through real-life examples and interactive discussion.
