Dr Juan David Quiceno reflects on love and freedom in the interdisciplinary thought seminars
Dr Juan David Quiceno examines human relationships and the tension between dependence and freedom in love, exploring how technology and self-esteem influence personal bonds.
The Institute for Culture and Thought (CIP) has organised two sessions this week on Love, Freedom, and Dependencies, led by Dr Juan David Quiceno, who holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Navarra. The seminars, aimed at students, took place on Wednesday at the Sant Cugat Campus and yesterday, Thursday, at the Barcelona Campus.
The seminar provided a space for reflection on human relationships and how love is perceived and experienced in today's society. During the session, Dr Quiceno explored fundamental questions about emotional dependence, its manifestations and causes, as well as the signs of a free and healthy love. Through dialogue, attendees had the opportunity to discuss the influence of technology on the formation of personal bonds and the tension between instant gratification and deep relationships.
One of the key points of the seminar was the distinction between love based on dignity and love reduced to a logic of exchange. Drawing on Immanuel Kant’s quote, "Everything has either a price or a dignity," Dr Quiceno examined how low self-esteem, a lack of boundaries, and a distorted self-image can lead to dependent relationships, characterised by fear of abandonment, jealousy, and excessive control.
The series of interdisciplinary thought seminars, organised by the CIP, aims to foster dialogue and the exchange of ideas among students, providing a space for reflection on the great questions of human experience.
