On 3 November, Dr Ortega-Monasterio y Gastón, lecturer for the UIC Barcelona Faculty of Law, entered the Royal European Academy of Doctors as a corresponding academician, in a ceremony held in the conference hall of the Edifici Foment del Treball.
The new academy member read a speech entitled “Psychiatry in the Face of Cultural History.” Response on behalf of the Academy was given by Dr Maria Àngels Calvo, PhD in Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy.
Leopold Ortega Monasterio, current president of the Spanish Society for Forensic Psychiatry, holds a medical degree from the Universitat de Barcelona. Specialising in psychiatry and neurology, he defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland) and expanded his clinical training at the University of Alberta Hospital (Canada). He is part of the UIC Barcelona teaching team and is currently the honorary director of the Official Master’s Degree in Legal, Forensic and Criminological Psychopathology at the UIC.
El 3 de novembre el Dr. Ortega-Monasterio i Gastón, professor de la Facultat de Dret de UIC Barcelona, va ingressar a la Reial Acadèmia Europea de Doctors com a acadèmic corresponent, en un acte celebrat a la sala d’actes de Foment del Treball.
En l’acte d’investidura, el nou acadèmic va llegir el discurs d’ingrés titulat “La psiquiatria davant la història de la cultura”. En nom de la Reial Corporació, va contestar la Dra. M. Àngels Calvo, doctora en Veterinària i en Farmàcia.
Leopoldo Ortega-Monasterio, actual president de la Societat Espanyola de Psiquiatria Forense, és doctor llicenciat en Medicina per la Universitat de Barcelona. Especialitzat en Psiquiatria i Neurologia, va defensar la seva tesi doctoral a la Universitat de Lausana (Suïssa) i va ampliar la seva formació clínica a l’Hospital de la Universitat d’Alberta (Canadà). Pertany a l’equip docent de UIC Barcelona i és actualment el director honorífic del Màster Oficial en Psicopatologia Legal, Forense i Criminològica de la Universitat.
