Dr Mercè Boada receives the 16th Balmis Award in Alicante for her work in Alzheimer’s research

The neurologist and lecturer at UIC Barcelona has been recognised for her contribution to the development of an Alzheimer’s vaccine, currently in phase 3 of research

Dr Mercè Boada, neurologist and lecturer in the Department of Medicine at UIC Barcelona, has been awarded the 16th Balmis Award in Alicante. This prestigious recognition, awarded by the Rotary Club of Alicante, highlights her contribution in the fight against Alzheimer’s and her key role in the development of a vaccine for this neurodegenerative disease.

Dr Boada is one of the leading experts in Alzheimer's research both nationally and internationally, and is co-founder and medical director of the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona, a reference in the care and study of Alzheimer's disease. Throughout her professional career, the lecturer of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of UIC Barcelona has also participated in multiple research projects and international clinical trials, which has positioned her work at the forefront of the fight against neurodegenerative diseases.

The Balmis Prize adds to the numerous awards that Dr Boada has received in her research career and commitment to teaching and therapeutic innovation, such as the Award for Professional Excellence (2008), the Josep Trueta Medal (2012), the Creu de Sant Jordi (2016), the Alzheimer’s Prize of the Spanish Society of Neurology (2021) and the Gold Medal for Scientific Merit of the City of Barcelona (2023).

The award ceremony of the Balmis Prize will take place on 11 April in Alicante.
