Dr Mercedes Fernández Lobato sponsors the graduation of UIC Barcelona’s fourth cohort of the Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences

“The 21st century will not only belong to artificial intelligence, but also to biomedicine. You have the opportunity to change how we live and how long we live,” said Dr Mercedes Fernández Lobato during her speech as sponsor of the fourth graduating cohort of the Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Sciences at UIC Barcelona

The University’s Aula Magna hosted the graduation event on 27 June, a formal and moving occasion that brought together family, friends and teaching staff to celebrate and recognise the students’ achievements.

The gathering, reflecting a strong commitment to science, academic excellence and a forward-looking vision for the future of biomedicine, was chaired by Dr Rosalía Rodríguez, director of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Dr Mercedes Fernández Lobato, lead researcher of the Translational Control of Liver Disease and Cancer group at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS), served as sponsor of the cohort.

In her address, Dr Fernández Lobato encouraged the new graduates to become drivers of change in an era shaped by biomedical progress: “You hold the knowledge and sensitivity needed to transform the world, to change how we live and how long we live. You have the chance to do things we cannot yet even imagine,” she said. “To achieve this, don’t just follow the paths already laid out. Think ahead. Build what does not yet exist. The world needs you,” she added.

Following the speech, diplomas were presented to the new graduates. One of the most memorable moments was the awarding of the Extraordinary Prize for Best Academic Record, which went to student Ignasi Fábregas in recognition of his outstanding performance throughout the degree.

Student representatives Aina Redondo and Ruth Maldonado spoke on behalf of the cohort, reflecting on the challenges they had faced together over the past four years, expressing gratitude for the support received, and highlighting the group’s spirit of perseverance.

The proceedings concluded with remarks from Dr Rosalía Rodríguez, who praised the personal and professional qualities of the new graduates: “You are a determined, proactive and motivated cohort, with clear ideas and a strong sense of vocation. The biomedical profession is a long-distance journey. You are ready to respond with scientific rigour and social commitment,” she said. Dr Rodríguez also highlighted the importance of lifelong learning and of staying true to the values that define the profession: “Learning never ends. Move forward with courage, perseverance and heart. Our patients are both our purpose and our responsibility.”

This event marks the closing of an important chapter for a new cohort of biomedical scientists, who are now warmly welcomed into the UIC Barcelona Alumni community.
