Entrepreneurs from different sectors tackle the legal challenges of launching a business initiative

They did so within the framework of the third session in the 2021 UIC Barcelona Entrepreneurship Series, which aims to promote entrepreneurship in the university environment based on success stories

The legal aspects that arise when starting up a new business activity are one of the most important issues when setting up any business project. For this reason, the third session in the 2021 UIC Barcelona Entrepreneurship Series aimed to focus on the legal challenges that arise when first setting up a business, with a round table that brought together three entrepreneurs who are at the forefront of successful business projects.

Silvia Martínez, a founding partner at Lexcrea, a law firm that works with both start-ups and investors and also venture capital companies, underlined the importance of the commitment that entrepreneurs make from the start: “The rules of the game must be very clear from the outset, as well as the commitments made by the founding partners when they set up a company.” Martinez also said that any ‘start-up’ begins “with a lot of excitement, but few financial resources,” and illustrated the importance of the different fiscal and legal mechanisms used to attract and retain talent.

Àngel Bou, CEO and co-founder of Simplr, a sustainable consumption platform that offers product and service subscriptions, also underlined the importance of analysing every detail at the start of a business project: “Although the beginnings of a company’s foundation are beautiful, one must be rational and undertake an analysis of the involvement of each partner in making decisions.” Bou also pointed out that this rationality allows you to have “a good overview of the situation” and anticipate potential changes in the medium term.

On the other hand, Aleix de Castellar, CFO and Global Strategy Manager at Apartool, a platform that offers temporary hosting solutions for corporate customers, has a different view of building a business: “I am not in favour of distributing a company equally between partners, I think it is important that there is a leader named at the beginning so that the rest of the team can follow them.” The entrepreneur added that if there is “a clear organisation chart and a set foundation from the start,” this will be reflected in the company’s corporate culture.

In this debate, moderated by Òscar Carbó, Director of the Centre for Knowledge Transfer and Research Valuation at UIC Barcelona, the entrepreneurs agreed on many of the current problems faced by next-generation companies and pointed to certain mechanisms that may be useful for new entrepreneurs.

The inaugural session of the 2021 Entrepreneurship Series 2021 was jointly organised by the Department of Alumni & Careers and Corporate Development and the Vice-Rectorate for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer at UIC Barcelona. The event was held entirely online and was free for everyone who wished to participate.
