The Faculty of Dentistry introduces European dentistry to two students from the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine

Christine Eckert and Adriana Atiencia, third-year students at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (USA), have completed a week-long training placement at the Faculty of Dentistry at the Sant Cugat campus, as part of the collaboration agreement between the two universities. During their visit, they gained an in-depth understanding of the European dental education system and enhance their practical training in various specialities.

As the two third-year dental students explain, “We decided to join this exchange programme because we were curious to see how dental schools operate in other countries and, specifically, to learn more about the different approaches to dentistry in Spain.”

During their stay, Christine and Adriana took part in theoretical classes, assisted in the undergraduate clinic, and observed advanced techniques in master's programmes. This experience allowed them to broaden both their clinical and professional perspectives. They also highlighted the opportunity to collaborate directly with local students and share educational experiences.

“The highlight of our stay has definitely been seeing all the specialities offered at the Faculty of Dentistry at UIC Barcelona. This learning experience has allowed us to deepen and expand our knowledge of different aspects of dentistry,” said Adriana.

The students praised the Faculty’s teaching methodology, especially the teamwork and interdisciplinary approach to clinical cases, which fosters collaboration and encourages student independence.

“I was especially impressed by how well UIC Barcelona students work together. The teaching methodology of the degree allows students to collaborate on a single case, guiding each other through the process. This not only strengthens their technical skills but also promotes teamwork in a real clinical setting,” added Adriana.

Both Christine and Adriana agree that the experience has led to significant personal and professional growth. In addition to acquiring new clinical knowledge, the exchange allowed them to discover different dental approaches and learn to work in a multicultural environment.

“This experience has not only enhanced my skills as a future dentist but also helped me grow as a person. Connecting with students from different countries and learning from their professional journeys has been both inspiring and enriching,” said Christine.

Adriana, meanwhile, emphasises the importance of stepping outside one's comfort zone and taking the opportunity to learn in a different environment, “I would absolutely recommend this experience to my colleagues. It’s a fantastic opportunity to grow, both personally and professionally. Immersing yourself in a new culture while learning from different perspectives is truly unique.”

Christine Eckert and Adriana Atiencia’s stay at UIC Barcelona marks the first student exchange between the Faculty of Dentistry at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry at the Sant Cugat campus, as part of the collaboration agreement between the two institutions. This experience adds to those undertaken by UIC Barcelona students in previous years, who have completed placements at Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, fostering international learning, knowledge exchange, and the academic and personal enrichment of students involved in the programme.
