Faculty of Law hosts new session on recent VAT developments with Cuatrecasas
The deputy director-general for Consumption Taxes, Ricardo Álvarez, outlined the main tax changes as well as the roll-out of e-invoicing and the Verifactu system
The Faculty of Law at UIC Barcelona in collaboration with leading law firm Cuatrecasas, held a new edition of its online session “Recent developments in VAT” on Thursday 21 May. The webinar was led by Ricardo Álvarez, deputy director-general of Consumption Taxes from the Directorate General for Taxes of the Ministry of Finance.
The session also featured Meritxell Yus, partner at Cuatrecasas, and Dr Salvador Durany, director of the Lifelong Learning Master’s Degree in Taxation Law, who introduced the topic and set out the main issues addressed in the presentation.
Focus on e-invoicing and Verifactu
During the session, Ricardo Álvarez reviewed the most recent regulatory changes affecting VAT. This edition focused primarily on new technological requirements and tax control mechanisms. Particular attention was given to the new obligation to issue electronic invoices and to how Verifactu operates – an online invoice verification system developed by the Spanish Tax Agency to combat tax fraud and support the digitalisation of companies’ accounting processes.

The session was attended by students from the Master’s Degree and the Postgraduate Degree in Tax Consultancy (MAF and PAF), along with lecturers and tax professionals interested in the practical implications of these developments.
A commitment to practical, lifelong training
Through this initiative, the Faculty of Law continues to strengthen its collaboration with Cuatrecasas by offering high-quality training closely connected to professional practice.
Dr Salvador Durany highlighted the value of continuing these sessions: “We believe it is important to offer this type of specialised training. It allows us to bring the latest regulations and the experts who interpret them closer to our students and to professionals in the sector, making a meaningful contribution to their practical and ongoing professional development.”
