Frederic Marimon, new director of the Observatory on Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies (OIANT)

The vice-dean of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, Frederic Marimon, replaces Professor Pere Buhigas as head of the OIANT.

The Observatory on Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies (OIANT), created in 2020, seeks to establish a public debate on the ethical responsibility of these new technologies that go beyond artificial intelligence: virtual reality, robotics, machine learning, etc.

“One of the challenges facing the Observatory is to provide students with the skills and ethical criteria that will enable them to use tools related to artificial intelligence in their sector,” says Marimon. In addition, the new director highlights that the Observatory will continue to work with an integrative approach that involves all members of the university community: the PDI, the PAS and the companies.

Frederic Marimon holds a PhD in Business Administration and is a tenured professor and the vice-dean of the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences at UIC Barcelona. He earned his degree in Industrial Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona and a Master’s degree in Business Management from IESE in Barcelona.

Dr Marimon’s work centres around operations management and service companies. His research is mainly focused on quality management and the measurement of electronic quality, especially in the services sector. He now takes over as director of the OIANT aiming to continue driving the observatory in promoting and spreading knowledge on artificial intelligence within the university community of UIC Barcelona.
