Hue Studio, founded by UIC Barcelona graduate Sergi Viñals, wins IMPSOL 2025 first prize with a social housing project in Tiana
The winning proposal introduces a new way of living based on sustainability, community life and integration with the Maresme landscape
Hue Studio, an architecture studio founded by Sergi Viñals, graduate of the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, has been awarded first prize in the IMPSOL 2025 competition for its social housing proposal in Tiana. Organised by the Metropolitan Institute for Land Development and Property Management (IMPSOL), the competition annually recognises the most innovative and affordable architectural solutions in the Barcelona metropolitan area.
The winning project is rooted in a deep understanding of the territory, closely linked to the agricultural landscape of the Maresme region and the dispersed structure of traditional buildings. Rather than proposing a single volume, the team opted for a fragmented strategy that allows for natural integration with Tiana’s urban and rural surroundings, creating an open and walkable layout that fosters community life.
Social housing with a territorial and ecological vision
The development is composed of three volumes arranged along the slope of the site, freeing up the central space for shared uses such as squares, courtyards and green areas. This layout generates a system of intermediate spaces that promote social interaction, a gradual transition between public and private areas, and a way of living that is connected to the environment.
Each home has been designed with inclusivity and flexibility in mind, avoiding internal hierarchies and prioritising natural light, cross ventilation and openness to the landscape, without compromising on privacy or comfort. The model adapts to diverse lifestyles and evolves over time to meet residents’ changing needs.

Sustainable, efficient and low-impact construction
From a construction perspective, the project stands out for its sustainable, cost-effective and expressive approach. The structure combines load-bearing walls made of compacted earth – providing thermal inertia and passive comfort – with CLT slabs and timber beams, significantly reducing the building’s carbon footprint.
The result is an austere, sensitive and adaptable form of architecture that moves away from standardised models to offer a living environment that respects both the land and the community. More than just a building, the project proposes a fragment of a liveable city that prioritises care for people and the environment.
A recognition of young talent from UIC Barcelona
This award is a new recognition of the emerging talent nurtured at UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, where Sergi Viñals completed his undergraduate studies. Through his work at Hue Studio, the graduate has established an architectural practice committed to social transformation, material sustainability and territorial regeneration.
