Josep Lluís i Ginovart, new numerary member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors
UIC Barcelona lecturer of architecture Josep Lluís i Ginovart was recently inducted as a numerary member the Royal European Academy of Doctors (RAED). The reception took place yesterday, 23 April in the function room of the Foment del Treball, in Barcelona.
In his admission speech, titled “Practical geometry of sacred architecture”, Ginovart analysed the role of geometry in the construction of the Gothic cathedral in Tortosa, discussing the knowledge of the ecclesiastical promoters, the skills of the medieval masters and current digital analysis technology. Through a close study of Antoni Guarc's trace parchment, the Tortosa chapter library and data obtained with Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) technology, the new academic member demonstrated that the theses of Worringer, Panofsky and von Simson - who defended a Neoplatonic basis in the geometric definition of the cathedrals - can be empirically contrasted today.
Ginovart explained how knowledge of Euclid's Elementa, Plato's Timaeus and their great transmitters - such as Chalcidius, Macrobius, Gerbert of Aurillac and Adelbert of Bath - influenced the sacred proportions of Gothic architecture.
The speech was answered by Juan Trias de Bes, who also holds a doctorate in Architecture, is a full academic and lecturer at UIC Barcelona. He praised Ginovart's research and teaching career and his ability to unite tradition, research and technological innovation.
With this appointment, Josep Lluís i Ginovart joins an institution that promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and the recognition of excellent careers in the academic, scientific and cultural fields.
