Lecturer Arturo Méndiz premieres the documentary Luminoso Espacio Salvaje
Arturo Méndiz, lecturer in the Faculty of Communication Sciences, has premiered the documentary Luminoso Espacio Salvaje, in which he took part as producer alongside Bastian Films, in collaboration with the Panamanian production company Apertura Films.
Luminoso Espacio Salvaje is a 90-minute feature-length film that explores the concept of death from multiple perspectives, beginning with the death of the central character’s father, an Italian filmmaker living in Panama. “The documentary portrays near-death experiences through a range of different characters,” explains Arturo Méndiz, the film’s producer.
Directed by Mauro Colombo, the international production Luminoso Espacio Salvaje recently premiered in Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza, Mallorca, Valencia and Elche. With its cross-cutting perspective, the film was shot in Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Panama, Chile and even in the middle of the ocean.
According to the synopsis, the story begins when the Italian filmmaker comes across a lifeless body on a road deep in the jungle. “The person revives for a few seconds and then dies again. Faced with this extraordinary coincidence, Mauro embarks on an intimate journey into uncharted territory, in search of a dialogue with death,” the synopsis continues.
The film delves into the personal stories of unusual individuals who confront extreme and undefined spaces, challenging viewers to reflect on their own perceptions of the physical and symbolic boundaries between life and death. “We explore symbolic perspectives on death, such as the death of space in a black hole. We filmed images in the Atacama Desert in Chile, home to the world’s largest observatory,” says lecturer Arturo Méndiz, who teaches the Audiovisual Production course on the Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Communication at UIC Barcelona.
Supported by the Ministry of Culture and the ICEC, Luminoso Espacio Salvaje offers a gateway to a deeper understanding of the context of loss and the mysteries of existence.
