Lecturer Frederic Marimon reflects on the impact of AI on sustainability during a stay in Argentina
The director of the Observatory on Artificial Intelligence and New Technologies at UIC Barcelona (OIANT), Frederic Marimon, recently spent time in the South American country, where he took part as a keynote speaker at the international congress Sustainable Development and Artificial Intelligence and was invited by various media outlets to share his insights on the impact of AI.
Lecturer Frederic Marimon was the keynote speaker at the 3rd International Congress San Juan + Sostenible, held on 15–16 May in San Juan, Argentina. In his talk, Marimon reflected on how emerging technologies – particularly artificial intelligence – are redefining sustainability strategies across both the public and private sectors.
During his visit, he also took part in training sessions and institutional exchanges with representatives of the Institute for Sustainable Development at the Catholic University of Cuyo – one of the organisers of the congress, alongside the Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainable Development and the Ministry of Mining of the province of San Juan.
Marimon was also invited to appear on various local television programmes, where he discussed the ethical, social and economic challenges posed by the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence. As director of the OIANT, he stressed the need for sustainability models to incorporate criteria such as equity, energy efficiency and technological responsibility.
His visit coincided with a pivotal moment for the region: San Juan is in the midst of expanding its mining projects – particularly copper and lithium – and aims to position itself as a leader in using technology to promote responsible and sustainable development.
