The lecturer in the Faculty of Law was awarded First Prize for Best Paper at the International Congress “New Challenges in Intellectual Property IV: Music”, for a study focused on the legal challenges arising from the use of generative systems in the field of composition
The paper submitted by lecturer Marc Simon Altaba, member of the Faculty of Law at UIC Barcelona, was awarded First Prize for Best Paper by the organising committee of the International Congress on New Challenges in Intellectual Property IV: “Music”, held at the University of Oviedo from 29–30 January 2026.
Under the title “The Ghost in the Machine: Generative AI and Copyright in Music Creation”, the paper explores the legal challenges posed by the use of generative artificial intelligence in music composition, with a special focus on authorship, originality and rights ownership.
The distinction awarded by the congress organisers underscores both the significance and contemporary relevance of the research and its contribution to the academic debate surrounding emerging technological challenges in music-related intellectual property.
