Montserrat Gas-Aixendri, elected member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Canon Law

The appointment was made during the 17th Convention of the Consociatio Internationalis Studio Iuris Canonici Promovendo celebrated in Paris

Dr Montserrat Gas-Aixendri has been elected to be one of the 21 members that make up the Board of Directors of the International Association of Canon Law, comprised of members from more than 50 countries around the world. Elections for the board were held during the 17th conference of the Consociatio Internationalis Studio Iuris Canonici Promovendo, celebrated at the Institut Catholique de París, between 13 and 16 September. Dr Gas-Aixendri, professor and vice-dean of the faculty of Law UIC Barcelona, expressed her satisfaction for the appointment, since “the new directive calls for a greater presence of women canonists", she stated.

Gas-Aixendri also participated as a speaker at the convention, which this year focused on the topic “Person, law and justice: the contribution of canon law to contemporary legal experience.” In her speech, the jurist presented a report on equality and gender discrimination in canonical associations. Her contribution analysed the application of the principle of equality in the institutions of the Catholic Church, and more specifically in the associations, following a recent ruling by the Spanish Supreme Court.

Gas-Aixendri will serve for four years and anticipates the organisation of all types of scientific activities for the development and study in the field of canon law.
