Nina Magomedova analyses COIL pedagogy as a response to the challenges of university internationalisation

In the latest CYD Report, Nina Magomedova, a lecturer at the Faculty of Business Administration and Management, examines the role of COIL pedagogy (Collaborative Online International Learning) as a key solution for addressing the challenges of digitalisation and internationalisation in Spanish universities.

According to Magomedova’s analysis, universities face the challenge of preparing students for a global market where digital and intercultural competencies are essential. Despite Generation Z having grown up surrounded by technology, many students lack the skills for effective communication in virtual collaborative work environments. In this context, COIL learning enables international experiences without the need for physical mobility, fostering academic cooperation between universities in different countries.

The report highlights that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the implementation of this methodology, driving the adoption of digital tools for teaching. However, Magomedova warns that consolidating the COIL model requires greater investment in teacher training and technological infrastructure that facilitate collaboration between educational institutions across countries.

One of the most significant aspects of the study is the impact of COIL learning on graduate employability. According to Magomedova, companies increasingly value the skills acquired through these programmes, such as the ability to work in multicultural teams and familiarity with digital communication environments. Furthermore, she notes that universities that have incorporated COIL into their academic offerings have boosted their appeal to international students.

Despite its benefits, the report also identifies challenges in implementing COIL. These include the need to adapt university curricula to incorporate such learning experiences and the importance of ensuring fair and effective assessment of student outcomes. Magomedova stresses that while digital internationalisation is a powerful tool, it should not replace physical mobility but rather complement it.

In conclusion, the study highlights COIL pedagogy as a key avenue for strengthening the international dimension of Spanish universities. Its integration into higher education not only expands global learning opportunities but also helps enhance graduates’ competitiveness in an increasingly digitalised and globalised professional environment.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is one of UIC Barcelona’s clear commitments to internationalisation and educational innovation, implemented across various faculties. One example is the project delivered by the Faculty of Communication Sciences in collaboration with Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology (IADT) in Ireland, focusing on transmedia storytelling.
