The Nursing Department strengthens its leadership in clinical simulation and OSCE in international forums

Lecturers Encarna Rodríguez and Laura Brichs from the Department of Nursing at UIC Barcelona have recently participated in several significant academic meetings, both national and international, where they shared their experience in the implementation of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and its impact on patient safety

During these meetings, organised by leading entities such as the Spanish Society of Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety (SESSEP) and the Nursing Research Group on Simulation in Catalonia and Andorra (GRISCA), the teachers presented the progress made in integrating patient safety into nursing education, with a strong emphasis on the role of simulation in developing essential clinical skills. They also explored the challenges faced in validating assessment rubrics for the OSCE and shared valuable insights from over twelve years of experience using OSCEs to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

One of the most innovative events they took part in was the First Ibero-American Congress on Simulation-Based Education (RETS), held in the metaverse, a virtual space that enabled wider participation and facilitated knowledge exchange among professionals from across the globe. During these sessions, Rodríguez and Brichs outlined the development of the OSCE at UIC Barcelona and its establishment as a cornerstone of the university’s healthcare training programme.

Encarna Rodríguez, researcher and director of the Department of Nursing, reflected, "After more than a decade of implementing the OSCE, we’ve seen how clinical simulation plays a crucial role in student development, helping them gain vital skills for patient safety." Lecturer Laura Brichs added, "Incorporating patient safety into both education and assessment has been key to ensuring that future professionals are equipped with the skills needed to prevent errors and improve the quality of care."

Their participation in these events highlights the Department of Nursing at UIC Barcelona’s ongoing commitment to educational innovation and excellence, reinforcing its role as a leader in integrating clinical simulation into teaching and assessment.
