Pol Ricart, Medicine graduate, awarded UIC Barcelona Alumni Prize for developing a medical diagnostic support app for low-income countries

The tool, developed as an offline mobile application and currently implemented in public health systems in Ethiopia and Nigeria, supports primary care professionals by guiding them through a structured clinical interview and physical examination

MedBrain, the medical diagnostic support app developed by Medicine graduate Pol Ricart, has been awarded the 2025 UIC Barcelona Alumni Prize for Best Social Transformation Project at the UIC Barcelona Global Alumni Meeting, held on 7 July.

Upon receiving the award, Ricart thanked UIC Barcelona for its support, saying the university “shared the vision of the project from the very beginning” and expressed special gratitude to Dr Argemí and Dr Balaguer, Medicine lecturers who had a significant impact on his academic years.

In the context of a severe shortage of specialist doctors, MedBrain empowers nurses, community health workers and other healthcare personnel in rural areas by guiding them through the entire clinical process: from triage and diagnosis to therapeutic decision-making and patient follow-up. In fewer than 15 questions, the assistant tool can generate an accurate clinical diagnosis and a personalised management plan, tailored to the resources available at each health centre.

The Nigerian government has externally validated the tool through a clinical trial, which demonstrated a diagnostic accuracy of 92% when used by nursing staff in primary care. These results position MedBrain as a key technological solution for improving healthcare quality in regions with limited medical resources.

The Alumni Prizes also recognised the career of Jordi Aranega, Business Administration graduate and general vice-president and European general manager at HRC. In addition,  studio Arquitectura-G, founded by former Architecture students Jordi Ayala, Jonathan Arnabat, Aitor Fuentes and Igor Urdampilleta, received the award for an institution founded or led by a graduate with strong international presence.

The UIC Barcelona Global Alumni Meeting serves as a reunion for former students to celebrate the talent, achievements and vocation of the Alumni community.
