A project for accessible telemedicine cabins wins Rethinking Mobility in Calonge and Sant Antoni

In collaboration with the Calonge and Sant Antoni Town Council, the three student groups awarded in the project Rethinking Mobility in Calonge and Sant Antoni were announced on Saturday 7 March. The winning teams are made up of students from the Master’s Degree in Architecture & Design Business Management at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture. The initiative stems from the agreement between the University and the Calonge and Sant Antoni Town Council

The first prize, which asked students to design a new primary care centre for the municipality, was awarded to Democratizando la atención sanitaria en Calonge y Sant Antoni (Democratising healthcare in Calonge and Sant Antoni), developed by León A. M. Götz, Luiza Abitante, Emiliia Gertsog and Deborah Damiete. Their proposal combines a network of walk-in HealthPods (accessible telemedicine cabins) with an electric micro-shuttle service known as HealthRide, making healthcare, in their words, “physically and digitally closer to everyday life”.

The second prize was awarded to Parc Conviu, by Martina Sabo, Rachana Vema, Kate Sandkamp and Dhruti Muralidhar. The project set out to create a child-centred public park that reimagines the area around the new primary care centre as a social gathering point for Calonge and Sant Antoni. “Designing with children in mind supports healthier municipal development and strengthens community life,” the students noted.

The third prize went to Integrant: seguridad, cuidado e inclusión para las personas mayores (Integrant: safety, care and inclusion for older people), by Marwah Elgzeary, Maryam Elgzeary, Meliza Cepeda and Beatrice Arellano. Their proposal outlines an integrated system connecting the primary care centre with patients via a digital platform, complemented by an electric microbus shuttle service for older residents. The students highlighted that it offers a service that is “safe, accessible and reliable between people’s homes and healthcare facilities”.

A professional panel selected the winning proposals at an event attended by Mr Albert Ros, deputy mayor; Mr Èrik Soles, municipal architect; and Ms Txell and Ms Maite from the Tourism Department. Representing UIC Barcelona was Dr Maria Isabel Gabarró, director of the Master’s Degree in Architecture & Design Business Management at the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture.

Calonge Impact Master’s UIC

The session held on 7 March marked the conclusion of Calonge Impact Master’s UIC, a project developed under the agreement signed between UIC Barcelona and Calonge and Sant Antoni Town Council. The proposal put forward by the council, “Rethinking Mobility in Calonge and Sant Antoni. The Role of a New Primary Care Centre in Sustainable Transport”, aimed to generate innovative solutions to local challenges through shared knowledge and teaching. The students on the master’s degree developed the project with the mentorship of El Risell, specialists in eco-efficiency and generative mobility.
