A student from the UIC Barcelona Doctoral School wins the first prize at the European Congress of Internal Medicine (ECIM 2025)
Munir Mohamed, a medical resident at the Consorci Sanitari de Terrassa (CST), a teaching hospital affiliated with UIC Barcelona, is currently completing his doctoral thesis, which presents an innovative training project based on the use of a video game.
At the recent European Congress of Internal Medicine (ECIM), held in Florence, Munir Mohamed was awarded first prize in the Early Career “Celebrating Joy in Internal Medicine Award” category for his work “Levelling Healthcare Professional Training: How Serious Games Enhance Knowledge Acquisition and Application of Clinical Guidelines in Internal Medicine and Emergency”.
The winning project, part of his doctoral research, proposes an innovative educational methodology that uses a video game – developed by Mohamed himself – to support the learning and retention of clinical guidelines in internal medicine and emergency care.
The simulation of real-life cases through gaming is presented as a promising strategy in the training of young medical interns, offering a novel and effective alternative to traditional learning methods from both educational and clinical perspectives.
With the theme “Integrating Technology and Humanity for Sustainable Healthcare”, ECIM 2025 brought together over 2,100 participants from 82 countries and featured 166 speakers. Only seven abstracts made it to the final in the Early Career “Celebrating Joy in Internal Medicine Award” category, with the submission of PhD student Munir Mohamed earning the top prize.
