UIC Barcelona co-organises the 3rd edition of the International Congress on the Civil War in the Lands of the Ebro

The Faculty of Law, in collaboration with local institutions, has promoted an academic gathering that brought together national and international experts across several municipalities in southern Catalonia

UIC Barcelona, through its Faculty of Law, co-organised the 3rd International Congress “The Civil War in the Lands of the Ebro (1936–1939)” – a biennial event led by Law lecturer Dr Josep Serrano Daura, which has become a reference point in the field of conflict studies.

The third edition of this congress featured contributions from researchers at national and international universities and institutions, offering a total of 28 papers and four round tables across multiple dates and locations: 14 March in Tortosa; 28, 29 and 30 March in Gandesa; 29 March in Flix; and 12 April in La Sénia.

For the first time, the congress took place across several venues, with sessions held in four municipalities in the Ebro region. According to the organisers, this decentralised format helped strengthen the connection between academic work and the local context, with a programme focused on the historical, legal and social analysis of the war and its consequences.

The opening lecture on 14 March was given by Dr Helen Graham of the University of London, entitled “The Republic Before the Ebro, the Ebro Before the World.” The closing address was delivered by Dr Patricia de Salvo from the University of Messina (Italy), who explored the Italian involvement in the war from a republican perspective.

The closing event took place on 12 April in La Sénia, with the participation of the town’s mayor, Maria Victòria Almuni, and the Government Delegate of the Generalitat in the Ebro region, Joan Castor Gonell.

The congress was co-organised by UIC Barcelona alongside Gandesa Town Council, Tortosa Town Council, the Centre for Studies on the Battle of the Ebro, the Prisma Cultural Association, the Association and Research Group on Historical Memory and Reconciliation, and the Catalan Society for Legal Studies, a branch of the Institute of Catalan Studies, among other collaborating institutions.
