The Unplugged Canvas: this year’s proposal by Architecture students at Llum BCN 2026

From 6–8 February 2026, students from UIC Barcelona School of Architecture took part in Llum BCN 2026, the annual light‑arts festival that transforms Poblenou into a large‑scale space for experimentation with light

With their proposal, The Unplugged Canvas, the students invited visitors to reflect on the potential of technology as a tool for shared creation. The installation, also known as Chroma Canvas, is based on the idea that a mobile phone, beyond its individual use, can become an instrument for collective participation. Using a system of reflections and projections, the piece transforms visitors’ devices into points of light that build an ever‑changing shared composition.

The project rethinks how mobile phones are typically used and converts them into a medium for open participation. What is normally an individual action in front of a screen becomes a shared experience in which each contribution helps form a collective artwork.

The installation, supervised by lecturer Iñaki Baquero, was developed by Alessia Achim, Camilla Alarcón, Mariia Chumak, Olivia de Burgh, Daniel Dulguerov, Alexia Espina, Julia Salman, Fatima Sapranaviciute, Chloe Ostrowski, Leonie Piot, Carolina Schilling, Ramalli Lorenzo, Judith López and Rion Mora.

By participating in Llum BCN 2026, UIC Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to innovative teaching and to the capacity of architecture to generate collective experiences in public space.
