“We all try to be more sustainable, but there is a contradiction because we want everything immediately”

Camila Fernández-Cruz is a fourth year audiovisual communication student at UIC Barcelona’s Faculty of Communication Sciences. Together with Jorge García Guerrero, who studied psychology, they were the winners of the Methos Media First Prize in this year’s IMMA Awards with the short What are you supposed to do? Their project has a clear social impact but also a psychological basis. It is an audiovisual montage of a poem read twice (backwards in the second reading), which is interpreted in a totally different way each time, forcing the spectator to think about sustainability. “I simply followed my creative instincts for the poem. There are many scenes in the short film that I think have a very powerful meaning, such as the person coming to break the earth with a shovel, and then it is clear that they are about to plant something,” says Jorge García Guerrero.

In this interview, Camila Fernández-Cruz talks about the anecdotes and most significant moments of the short film.

How did the idea of creating What are you supposed to do? come to you?

We wanted to do something different that had a powerful message. Jorge wanted to explore the individual from a psychological point of view. I really like to talk about social issues. I like stories that connect with people, with which they can identify.

What is the short film about?

We wanted to make people think about sustainability because it is a sensitive, emotive issue that is present every day; everyone talks about sustainability; it is something that is taken into account across the board. We all try to be more sustainable in our personal lives and in business. But there is also a contradiction because we choose immediacy over the simple things; we shop more online, we buy cheaply, we travel frequently.

How did you come up with the idea of including the poem?

This poem was written by Jorge. He had written it a year ago, and when he recovered it from forgotten history, it was quite exciting. It was exactly what we wanted to do, and it fit perfectly with everything, so it was really cool

How did you feel about winning Methos Media First Prize?

We are very excited, very happy because there was a lot of work behind it. There is an anecdote to accompany each shot. For example, it was difficult to film some shots at the airport. In the case of the bird it was horrible because there were no birds. We were waiting for a long time. But suddenly, a hawk appeared among the trees.

What was the most complicated?

It was quite intense to record the images because we had to hunt planes. We were very clear about how we wanted the short film to look, but we had to organise everything within a week because Jorge is from Madrid, and we had to record almost everything over a weekend. It was also difficult to find a song that fit with the poem. We wanted the poem to be read calmly and slowly, with background music that would add some emotion.

Where were your locations?

We filmed in La Cerdanya, in Sant Cugat, in the airport of El Prat de Llobregat and in Barcelona. We went to La Cerdanya over a weekend; we only had that weekend to film. It was there I shot the stream and the horse. But I couldn't shoot anything else. And the rest of the nature scenes were shot in Barcelona, on the road to les Aigues, because I didn’t quite like everything I had recorded in La Cerdanya; it didn’t transmit what I wanted to transmit, it didn’t have the light that I was looking for.

What did you do then?

At first I was very overwhelmed because we had very little time left to deliver it and it wasn’t close to being finished because we were missing images. But then on my own I found my shooting locations, and in the end everything has turned out perfect. And we have also won the prize, which we are delighted about.

What future challenges do you both have?

We have made two shorts together and both shorts have won. We are very happy and want to make more shorts because we realise that the effort we put in has been rewarded. Maybe in the future it will not be like that and some short will go wrong, but that doesn’t matter because we enjoy working through the whole process.
