Introduction

Endodontics is concerned with diseases affecting dental pulp, together with associated periradicular diseases. Endodontics comprises their prevention, diagnosis and treatment. This subject will provide the student with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to deal successfully with its clinical practice.

Knowledge of dental anatomy is essential in the training of Master's students of Endodontics and will facilitate better cognitive development. The purpose is to provide the necessary tools for the proper development of endodontic therapy in all its phases based on an in-depth knowledge of dental anatomy.

Pre-course requirements

No previous requirements.

Objectives

To define the concepts of endodontics and establish its objectives.

To learn about etiology, causes and clinical treatment of a variety of dental pulp and periapical inflammations.

To prepare a proper medical history to assess the state of the pulp.

To know the prognosis for root canal treatment depending on pre-operational variables.

To explain different types of endodontic treatment.

To describe emergency treatment of different pulpo-periapical pathologies.

To know which radiographs are essential for root canal treatment and to describe the technique for performing them.

To know the anaesthetic and analgesic techniques for the control of the pain.

To describe the ideal access openings for each tooth in the arch.

To list the usual canals and the most frequent variations for each tooth in the arch.

To describe instrumentation techniques during biomechanical preparation.

To list different irrigation solutions for use in biomechanical preparation, defining their properties and indications.

To explain the clinical sequence to be followed throughout biomechanical preparation.

To explain the objectives of root canal system obturation.

To know the clinical properties and clinical sequence of different canal obturation materials.

To know different endodontic treatments for an immature tooth.

To acquire precise and detailed knowledge of both the external and internal anatomy of each tooth.

To master anatomical dental terminology.

To apply the anatomical knowledge acquired in endodontic procedures.

To learn how to make a critical analysis of the literature.

To be able to discuss a topic quoting from the current and classic literature.

To perform access openings of each dental group correctly according to the specifics of each case and the anatomical variations present.

To diagnose the anatomical alterations of a tooth as well as its clinical and prognostic management.

To know indications, prognosis and treatment in cases of re-endodontics.

To learn techniques for managing anxious patients.

Competences/Learning outcomes of the degree programme

  • CN02 - Remember the theoretical and practical aspects of the methodology and work system in all fields of endodontics.
  • CP02 - Resolve the main endodontic complications through the correct preparation of a treatment plan in the context of daily clinical practice.
  • CP03 - Design treatment strategies for endodontic patients with special needs.
  • HB03 - Manage the complexity of each endodontic case.
  • HB04 - Classify endodontic cases as easy, moderate or complex.
  • HB07 - Combine prevention and treatment of the most common problems in the field of endodontics (perforations, steps, fractured instruments, etc.).
  • HB12 - Plan a defined and appropriate protocol in the event of endodontic failure.
  • HB13 - Diagnose any pulpo-periapical pathology of endodontic origin.
  • HB15 - Relate pulpal and systemic diseases in the specialized field of endodontics.
  • HB20 - Prepare an appropriate endodontic treatment plan based on an exhaustive clinical and radiographic analysis.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • - Scientific Bases in Endodontics - LEARNING OUTCOMES Title – CN02, HB06, HB07, HB11, HB13, HB17 Subject – Students will be able to: 1. Identify the etiology, etiopathogenesis and clinical presentation of pulpo-periapical pathologies in all its variations. 2. Differentiate the patient's pain based on its location, origin, pain and characteristics. 3. Apply a logical sequence of instrumentation, irrigation and obturation of the canal system, regardless of the degree of complexity of the case. 4. Classify the endodontic and restorative prognosis required by the different pulpo-periapical entities. 5. Select the most appropriate emergency treatment for each situation. 6. Design a drug administration plan in relation to pulpo-periapical pathology. 7. Modify your therapeutic strategy depending on the root status of the affected tooth. 8. Schedule the minimum radiographs necessary to perform a successful endodontic treatment without exposing the patient to excessive ionizing radiation.
