Introduction

Hospital Clinical Rotations

The hospital clinical rotations within the IMOS program are designed to provide students with a broader perspective on oral surgery by integrating them into hospital surgical teams and involving them in the management of clinical cases with moderate to high surgical complexity. These rotations are carried out during the first two years of the IMOS program in hospitals affiliated with UIC through collaboration agreements.

During the third year, students consolidate their knowledge, clinical competencies, and surgical skills in oral surgery through increased participation in clinical and surgical activities.

All clinical rotations are conducted under the direct supervision of a specialist and constitute an essential complement to the students' theoretical education.

These rotations are mandatory and are undertaken either individually or in pairs throughout the entire academic year of the second and third years of the residency program.

Pre-course requirements

Completion of a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course will be taken into consideration.

All students must be covered by the corresponding UIC insurance.

To participate in the hospital clinical rotations, students must:

  • Be enrolled in the IMOS program.
  • Have successfully completed the second year of the IMOS program.

In hospitals where required, students must sign the documentation acknowledging compliance with the Patient Data Protection Regulations

Objectives

Learning Objectives

  1. To acquire the ability to diagnose, plan treatment, and manage cases of moderate and high complexity in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  2. To introduce students to the different areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including oncologic surgery, salivary gland surgery, orthognathic surgery, and oral surgery.
  3. To understand and apply the principles of surgical sterility and operating field management in the hospital setting.
  4. To develop teamwork skills within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
  5. To participate in the development of the Master's Final Project and research activities.
  6. To consolidate and apply the knowledge and clinical competencies acquired during the first and second years of the program.

  • Develop an appropriate surgical treatment plan.
  • Acquire knowledge of the different surgical techniques used in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Understand the different types of anesthesia used in patients with oral and maxillofacial diseases, as well as their clinical indications.
  • Identify, use, and describe the surgical instruments and equipment employed in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
  • Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Establish appropriate postoperative management and provide discharge instructions.
  • Develop the skills required to design and conduct clinical studies and/or retrospective medical record reviews.
  • Demonstrate the ability to make effective and autonomous clinical decisions during diagnosis and throughout oral surgical procedures.

Syllabus

Teaching Methodology

IMOS students are required to attend the surgical activities and clinical sessions at the hospitals where they undertake their clinical rotations, either individually or in pairs. During these rotations, students will participate in the management of a wide range of clinical cases, primarily involving dentoalveolar surgery, as well as other areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including head and neck oncologic surgery, dentofacial deformities, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and other related conditions.

All IMOS students must complete a Surgical Logbook, documenting every surgical procedure in which they have participated as either the primary surgeon or the assistant surgeon throughout the training program. This Logbook will serve as an assessment tool and will also be used to support eligibility for certification by the European Board of Surgery.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Each student will complete a clinical rotation in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Hospital Universitari de Mollet. Attendance will follow the established schedule, allowing students to participate in the department's clinical activities, including outpatient clinics, operating theatre sessions, and other scheduled clinical and educational activities, always under the supervision of the responsible consultant.

Evaluation systems and criteria

Assessment System and Regulations for Hospital Clinical Rotations

Assessment of the hospital clinical rotations will be continuous and will be based on the following criteria:

  • Mandatory attendance and punctuality.
  • Active participation in the clinical and educational activities of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Participation in the discussion and presentation of clinical cases.
  • Professional attitude, teamwork, initiative, and responsibility.
  • Compliance with the hospital's and Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC) regulations regarding clinical practice, ethics, confidentiality, and patient safety.

Attendance at all scheduled clinical rotations is mandatory. Three consecutive unexcused absences, or any number of absences that prevents the student from achieving the required learning outcomes, may result in the loss of the right to continue the clinical rotation, following an assessment by the Head of the Department, the Master's Programme Director, and the course coordinator.

Furthermore, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Hospital Universitari de Mollet reserves the right to restrict, suspend, or withdraw a student's access to the clinical rotation whenever there are justified and objective reasons, including but not limited to:

  • failure to comply with hospital regulations or institutional policies;
  • conduct incompatible with professional standards or that may compromise patient safety;
  • disrespectful behaviour towards patients, relatives, students, or healthcare professionals;
  • breach of confidentiality or data protection regulations;
  • failure to comply with the hospital's or UIC's standards regarding professional attire, hygiene, identification, or professional conduct.

Any such decision shall be made by the supervising consultant responsible for the rotation, in coordination with the Master's Programme Director, in accordance with the applicable academic and hospital regulations, ensuring that the decision is objective, proportionate, and appropriately justified.
