Introduction
This course aims to provide second-year students of the University Master’s Degree in Oral Surgery and Implantology with a comprehensive and practical overview of dental clinic management. In addition to advanced clinical expertise, the professional practice of oral surgeons and implantologists requires competencies in leadership, economic management, marketing, communication, legal aspects, and quality assurance.
This fully on-site course is designed to equip students with strategic and operational tools that enable them to manage a dental clinic efficiently and ethically, lead work teams, improve the patient experience, and ensure the economic, legal, and organizational sustainability of their professional practice.
Pre-course requirements
To take this course, students must be enrolled in the second year of the Master's Degree in Oral Surgery and Implantology.
Objectives
The general objectives of the course are:

To understand the fundamentals of management and organization of a dental clinic.

To develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills.

To acquire basic knowledge of economic, financial, and tax management applied to dentistry.

To understand and apply patient-oriented marketing and communication strategies.
-
To identify the main legal, ethical, and regulatory aspects of professional practice.
-
To promote a culture of quality, patient safety, and continuous improvement.
Syllabus

Concept and objectives of management in the dental clinic.
-
Types of dental clinics: application of the “Blue Ocean Strategy”.
-
Change management: mindset for change and limiting beliefs.
-
Fixed mindset vs. growth mindset.
-
Organizational structure of the clinic: organizational chart and staff roles.
-
Communication with patients and the team: most frequent errors and best practices.
-
Situational leadership: adapting to the person and the situation.
-
Emotional aspects influencing leadership.
-
Organizational legal structures: Self-employed, Limited Company (SL), Professional Limited Company (SLP), Civil Partnership (SCP), among others.

Basic principles of accounting, taxation, and fiscal obligations.
-
Basic financial education: saving, planning, and growing personal finances.

Introduction to marketing: What is dental marketing?

Identifying the ideal patient.

Patient acquisition and loyalty strategies.
-
Message and communication strategy.
-
Digital marketing: social media, SEO/SEM, and online reputation.

Sales strategies and treatment plan acceptance.

Healthcare legislation applied to dentistry.
-
Patient data protection: LOPD and GDPR.
-
Professional civil liability in dentistry.
-
Quality management systems: ISO standards and accreditations.

Biosafety protocols.

Regulations on radiology and sterilization.
-
Practical sessions with invited professionals from the dental sector (speakers to be determined), focused on real-world application of the course contents.
Teaching and learning activities
In person
The course is delivered in a fully on-site format, using an active and participatory methodology focused on the practical application of knowledge.
Learning activities include:

Group dynamics and role-playing exercises.

Guided debates and critical reflection.
-
Real Life Sessions with invited professionals.
This methodology encourages active student participation, experiential learning, and the development of transversal competencies essential for professional practice.
Evaluation systems and criteria
In person
Assessment of the course will be on-site and will combine continuous assessment and a final examination, with mandatory attendance.
Attendance and Continuous Assessment (20% of the final grade)-
Attendance at on-site sessions is mandatory.

Continuous assessment will account for 20% of the final grade and will be based on:

Attendance control.
-
Completion and submission of exercises, activities, or assignments that may be proposed by the teaching staff throughout the course.

Unjustified absence or failure to complete assigned activities may negatively affect this component of the final grade.
Final Examination (80% of the final grade)-
The final examination will be on-site and will account for 80% of the final grade.

It will consist of 6 to 10 essay-type questions, designed to assess understanding, integration, and practical application of the course contents.
The final examination will evaluate:

Capacity for analysis and synthesis.

Practical application of knowledge to real dental management scenarios.

Critical reasoning and coherence of arguments.
-
Clarity of expression and appropriate use of professional terminology.
To pass the course, students must obtain a minimum pass grade, in accordance with the academic regulations of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya.
