Introduction

Postproduction and Editing is a 4 ECTS credit course offered during the second semester of the second year of the Audiovisual Communication degree. Its justification lies in the fact that postproduction is a key phase in creating audiovisual discourse in various transmedia formats and genres. Mastery of editing and postproduction conventions is what allows for the articulation of audiovisual narrative as a whole. This course aims to awaken in students a visual and technical sensitivity to build and refine creative projects in the audiovisual world, as well as to provide a solid foundation for video editing in the professional field.

No prerequisites are required.

Objectives

To introduce students to different advanced audiovisual editing techniques, primary software, as well as different techniques of expression in audiovisual language through editing.

Introduction to color correction and color grading in audiovisual products, as well as the application of digital effects and the insertion of motion graphics.

Introduction to the sound effects, audio editing, and mixing.

To provide an understanding of different video compression options.

Ultimately, to instill organizational values and work habits to facilitate their integration into audiovisual projects.

After completing the course, students will be able to:

Syllabus

The theoretical-practical program of this course includes the following content:

  • Editing criteria and the role of the editor (Theoretical-practical).

  • Understanding different editing styles with simple and complex examples (Theoretical).

  • Basic editing techniques in Adobe Premiere Pro (Theoretical-practical).

  • Creation of discourses and expressive uses of footage in editing (Theoretical-practical).

  • Advanced editing techniques in Adobe Premiere Pro (Theoretical-practical).

  • Control of different sound resources in editing (Theoretical-practical).

  • Introduction to postproduction and workflow (Theoretical-practical).

  • Introduction to postproduction and VFX techniques (Theoretical-practical).

  • Comprehensive understanding of postproduction workflow (Theoretical-practical).

Editing Workflow


  • (12.5%) Preparation of an editing project: Students will have to create proxies of camera footage according to the specifications discussed in class. Synchronize them with audio files and organize everything within the Adobe Premiere Pro project.


Advertising Block


  • (12.5%) Assembly and final editing of a commercial spot: Students will start editing an ad without going into details of music or voice-overs. This part focuses on selecting the best shots to create a coherent and satisfying narrative thread. The second part of the practice will involve adapting the edit to specified broadcast or social media publication formats.
  • (12.5%) Corporative Products: In this practice, students will apply the advertising editing knowledge gained in the previous practice to create a summary video of a well-known event hosted by a company. Students will also learn about the insertion of motion graphics and the use of split-screen editing.


Cinematic Block


  • (12.5%) Editing a dialogue sequence from El fotógrafo de Mauthausen: Students will edit a small monologue by Mario Casas, showcasing the space and selecting the best moments from the footage to contribute to the dramatic construction.
  • (12.5%) Narrative or conceptual music video editing. Student's choice.
  • (12.5%) Fight sequence editing from the film Exile: Students will edit the image and sound of a fight sequence between various characters. The ability to generate impact, comprehension of events, as well as sound and musical editing will be evaluated.
  • (12.5%) Final Edit: Fiction short film under 10 minutes. 
  • (12.5%) Promotion trailer for the final short film.

TRAINING ACTIVITY ECTS CREDITS
Coaching. Monitoring how students learn the content of the subject, either individually or in groups. In the coaching sessions, mistakes will be corrected, queries answered, and exercises and activities to achieve the established objectives will be suggested. 0.8
Focused Praxis. Handing in occasional exercises to learn theory through practice. 0.8
Meeting Point. Meetings will be organised with notable people from the professional and scientific fields or the international field, and students. These sessions will take the form of conferences, work sessions, discussions, or interviews, etc. 0.2
E-learning. Virtual learning based on ICT. 1.0
Lab. Working groups that combine theory and practice. The aim of these is not to undertake already known techniques, but instead to make progress that is both theoretical and technical. These Lab sessions will culminate in the creation of a professional or semi-professional product. 0.6
Peer learning. The aim of this activity is to ensure that students gain the ability to analyse and be critical. One way of achieving this is by correcting their peers' exercises and results, etc. Each student will be evaluated twice: as both a recipient and a transmitter of critical knowledge. 0.2
Mentoring programme. Ensuring a review of and in-depth look at competences and knowledge, as well as the development of habits involving social commitment and responsibility, with the strongest students providing guidance for students from lower years, particularly if they have any type of disability (physical, etc). 0.4

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person



First oportunity:

The student's grade is the result of the average of the 8 practices developed throughout the course. Students have one or two weeks (depending on the practice) to complete each assignment. In case of late submission, they can submit it later in the course, but they will be eligible for a maximum score of 6 out of 10. If not all practices are submitted, or if the overall average does not exceed 5 out of 10, students can opt to do an extra practice summarizing the content covered throughout the course. If students do not need it but wish to improve their average grade, they can also choose to do this practice.


Second and subsequent opportunities:

Editing of a fiction short film. Students will have 3 hours to edit the short film in the classroom to avoid the use of Artificial Intelligence tools in editing. (100%)
