The proposal of this master’s degree is to encompass the whole recovery of the athletes as a continuum trajectory of knowledge and application, including therapeutic interventions and readaptation. The focus is on maintaining the connection between recovery and subsequent readaptation, focusing on the athlete's sports skills. Ecological foundations are used as a reference to design tasks incorporate a perception of the environment, thus bringing the readaptation closer to the sporting reality.

This course is beneficial to both physiotherapists wishing to expand their professional field, and sports science graduates who would like to acquire knowledge about injuries, therapies and rehabilitation. There is also an emphasis on the importance of assessment, technology and data management in interdisciplinary teams, both for recovery and injury prevention.

The concept of ecology is the main reference and source of inspiration of this master's degree, so the University has established an institutional relationship with the Center for the Ecological Study of Perception & Action (CESPA) , authentic birthplace of the ecological concept and part of the University of Connecticut.

Presentation

Master in Rehabilitation and Return to Play in Sport is aimed at professionals capable of understanding the entire recovery process of the athlete, from the rehabilitation of the injury to the complete readaptation of the athlete.

Objectives

  1. Train the physiotherapy and sports sciences graduate in the whole recovery process of the athlete so that they:
  2. Know how to perform a search of scientific literature to allow the study of Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training  for the continuous development of this knowledge
  3. Have the ability to understand scientific evidence from a critical reflection on the different areas related to Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training
  4. Acquire the necessary knowledge to plan and programme all the essential content for Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training
  5. Have the necessary practical knowledge to implement a Rehabilitation and Sports Readaptation Training
  6. Are familiar with the most common harmful processes to physical activity and sports that can be improved through Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training 
  7. Can identify the most important risk factors in injury recovery to recognise them as assessment and improvement parameters in Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training
  8. Have the ability to assess the Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training process by identifying the most relevant risk factors in each damaging process
  9. Understand rehabilitation and post-injury readaptation from the ecological perspective of the perception-action construct 
  10. Are introduced to the most current technological resources of application in Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training
  11. Understand large databases that can be used to improve their understanding of Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training
  12. Be able to programme a Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training that is aimed at injury prevention 
  13. Have the ability to create exercises or effective tasks adapted to each specific situation of an athlete

Specific competences: 

  • CE1. Identify and describe the pathologies and physiopathologies in-depth that the human organism can suffer when exposed to distinct types of physical activity: both in subjects of different levels and those belonging to groups of special populations. 
  • CE2. Be able to identify the harmful mechanisms produced in the sports field, deepening the knowledge of the injury and the characteristics of the environment where it occurs. 
  • CE3. Analyse and apply physiological, biomechanical, psychological and social principles in Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training, while identifying inappropriate practices that may put health at risk.
  • CE4. Integrate scientific research in the field of Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training, understanding the methodologies and procedures developed in each study analysed. 
  • CE5. Design and develop research in the field of Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training with the intention of producing new knowledge to expand the scientific construct around the subject.
  • CE6. Assess and determine the functional state and physical condition of patients to be able to prepare reports related to the evolution of an athlete who has suffered an injury. 
  • CE7. Plan, schedule, implement and evaluate the processes of Sports Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training.

Internship

Any work experience practice has credit recognition of 6 ECTS credits. The total amount of hours in a professional centre will be 75 face-to-face hours, completed during the second semester of the course. The remaining 75 hours to complete this subject will be dedicated to the design of the planning, programming and determination of tasks of the Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training process in a specific clinical situation.
1.    Participation in the implementation of Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training in a real setting.
2.    Participation in the interdisciplinary development of clinical sessions.
3.    Design of the planning and programming of Rehabilitation and Readaptation Training.

Admission calls

The admission process is open during the entire academic year. Once your documentation has been validated, an online interview with a faculty member will be scheduled to evaluate your profile and learn about your motivations in relation to the master’s degree programme. 

Prerequisites & admissions

All candidates who comply with the general requirements and access routes to the degree and who have previous training and a university degree in Physiotherapy or in Sports Sciences, may apply for admission. The recommended admission profile is a person who, in addition to the requirements above, is motivated and interested in research and health promotion in the sports rehabilitation and readaptation patient.

Required documentation

Students with an official university degree from a European Union country
  1. An attested original photocopy of your original degree certificate or if the homologation thereof, or an original attested photocopy of the receipt for payment of the fees for issuing the degree certificate.
  2. An attested original photocopy of your academic transcript containing your marks for the university studies you have completed.

*If the documents are in a language other than Spanish, Catalan, English, French or Italian, a sworn Spanish translation of your degree certificate and academic transcript must be submitted.

Students with an official university degree from a non-European Union country
  1. A legalised original photocopy of your degree certificate.
  2. A legalised original photocopy of your academic transcript for the university studies you have completed.

* These documents must be legalised in your home country through diplomatic channels: Hague Apostille or Andrés Bello Convention.

* If the documents are in a language other than Spanish, please submit a sworn Spanish translation of your degree certificate and academic transcript.

In all cases:
  1. Two passport-sized photographs.
  2. Photocopy of national ID card (DNI) or passport.
  3. An up-to-date CV.
  4. A letter of motivation.

Admissions process

To apply for admission to the master’s programme, you must upload the required documentation to your admissions portal. Once validated, you will have an online interview with a faculty member to evaluate your profile and personal motivations to access the master’s degree programme.

Reservation and enrolment

Once accepted, you must pay 20% of the full cost of the master's degree programme to reserve a place.

Once your enrolment is complete, you must pay the remaining 80% in one lump sum.
