Academic visit by Dr Tetiana Klymchuk during Science Week at the Physical Engineering Programme, UTP (Colombia)
As part of Science Week organised by the Engineering Physics Programme, the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira (UTP) in Colombia welcomed Dr Tetiana Klymchuk, lecturer and researcher at UIC Barcelona and co-founder of Somia Solutions, renowned for her work in applied Artificial Intelligence and her efforts to democratise technology for small and medium-sized enterprises
UTP, recognised as one of Colombia’s most solid and prestigious public universities, has over 70,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education programmes, positioning it as a very important academic benchmark in the country and the Andean region. The visit was made possible thanks to the invitation extended by Dr Ricardo López Varona, a researcher in Quantum Computing, and Dr Walter Serna, director of the Engineering Physics Programme, who coordinated the academic aspects of the event and facilitated engagement between the guest and the Engineering Physics community.
During her stay, Dr Klymchuk, a lecturer in the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences, delivered a range of training activities aimed at students, researchers, teaching staff and representatives from the productive sector, including demystifying AI and generative models for a general audience, ethics, responsibility and international regulation of AI for engineering staff and students and a technical session for businesses focused on industrial applications of AI.
Dr Klymchuk’s session was attended by the rector of UTP, Dr Luis Fernando Gaviria Trujillo, who emphasised the importance of strengthening education in applied artificial intelligence and noted that “initiatives of this kind position UTP as a national benchmark in science and technology”. The Rector reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to preparing students to meet the challenges posed by frontier technologies.
The programme also benefited from the support of the dean of the Faculty of Basic Sciences, Dr Juan Pablo Trujillo Lemus, and the director of the Doctorate in Sciences, Dr José Gonzales.
As a result of this visit, UTP and UIC Barcelona are moving forward with an international academic collaboration agenda, which includes the development of a joint doctoral course in Applied Mathematics for Natural Language Processing and the first scientific visit by UTP to Universitat Internacional de Catalunya, scheduled to take place during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona.
This strategic alliance aims to strengthen research in applied AI, promote scientific talent and consolidate academic exchange networks between Europe and Latin America.
