Architecture students propose urban improvements for Ciutat Cooperativa (Sant Boi de Llobregat)
Students from the Master’s Degree in International Cooperation and Sustainable Emergency Architecture at UIC Barcelona have analysed the Ciutat Cooperativa neighbourhood with the aim of formulating proposals to strengthen social cohesion and urban sustainability. The project, carried out in collaboration with Sant Boi de Llobregat City Council, offers recommendations for improving public spaces.
Over the course of three weeks, students from UIC Barcelona’s Master’s in International Cooperation and Sustainable Emergency Architecture conducted an in-depth analysis of Ciutat Cooperativa in Sant Boi de Llobregat to develop urban planning proposals.
The project highlights the importance of encouraging community participation and promoting local activities. Among the proposals is the adoption of inclusive, multilingual communication to ensure all residents have access to information, The students also propose traffic calming measures and prioritise pedestrians, as well as the possible creation of a superblock in certain areas to enhance community life and shared use of public space.
The proposals include improvements to lighting, signage and distribution of urban furniture to make spaces more accessible. Additionally, they suggest optimising the placement of recycling bins and rest areas to foster social interaction.
Carmen Mendoza Arroyo, director of the master’s programme, emphasised that “Ciutat Cooperativa has great historical value, and these proposals aim to adapt the neighbourhood to today’s challenges, making it a more inclusive and sustainable space.” The students’ work provides a constructive vision of how to continue improving a neighbourhood with great potential as a model of inclusive urban planning.
