Architecture students showcase their proposals for the urban transformation of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat at the Final Degree Project exhibition

The exhibition was inaugurated by the town’s Mayor, Núria Marín and by rector Xavier Gil and is open until 31 August at the L’Harmonia space

Starting 15 July, the l’Harmonia space in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat will host the Final Degree Projects by students of UIC Barcelona School of Architecture. Under the title L’H: Hub of Hubs. Social challenges and urban reprogramming, the sample is composed of a total of seventeen proposals for L’Hospitalet de Llobregat designed by students in the final year of their Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture.

The exhibition’s opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of L’Hospitalet, Núria Marín, and the Deputy Mayor of the Public Space, Town Planning and Sustainability Area, Francesc Josep Belver i Vallès. Rector Xavier Gil and the director of UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, Josep Lluis i Ginovart, as well as the Final Degree Project lecturers and students, all spoke at the event. The general manager of the University, Josep Maria Torné Santos, was also present.

Four large transformation axes
The exhibition is structured on the four areas of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat that represent transformation axes –or urban hubs– with the aim of promoting urban restructuring that favours a city model more adapted to the social and environmental needs of the 21st century. Based on an analysis of the town’s current condition, the interventions offer hypotheses, fresh perspectives and specific solutions to the current debate surrounding the integration of new infrastructure in the city.

"In L'Hospitalet, we have strategic projects backed by big investments, but we also have more modest ones, which are also very important for day-to-day life. Projects that 'stitch' the town together, providing us with new housing, green spaces and facilities or that give pedestrians priority over vehicles, to name just a few. And we're not in this alone. The L'Hospitalet model seeks agreements, contributions and cooperation with other local governments, institutions and the private sector. And with universities. It is the only working method we deem viable", declared Mayor Núria Marín.

“The projects exhibited here today demonstrate the commitment of our lecturers, professors and students to the principles of contemporary architecture and urban planning and, beyond that, outline the future potential of L’Hospitalet as a European benchmark”, said Xavier Gil.

Anyone interested in viewing the exhibition can visit L’Harmonia for free until 31 August.
