The area of Biomedicine obtains a valorisation project that will allow for advances in the early detection of metastatic breast cancer

The project, led by researcher Roni Wright, has obtained funding under the UIC Barcelona Open Innovation | UICInnovació 2023 call, promoted by the University with the participation of Banco Santander

The project “MetaScan prototype development for the early detection of metastasis from liquid biopsy”, led by researcher Roni Wright, was presented to the internal call for projects to valorise research launched by UIC Barcelona last November.

Although a considerable proportion of breast cancers are cured, between 20% and 30% of patients end up metastasizing, with a five-year survival of less than 30%. For this reason, the project led by Wright aims to improve the early detection of metastases in cancers, especially in the case of metastatic breast cancer, with a non-invasive approach which is more accessible to patients. This is a crucial step in improving treatment options and survival for affected patients.

In previous studies, Wright found that inhibiting the NUDT5 protein could potentially lead to the elimination of cancer stem cells, thus reducing the side effects associated with other conventional treatments. As Wright explains, “It is true that there are currently promising treatments for metastatic cancers, but through the research conducted in recent years we have seen that a high percentage of tumours generate resistance.” “Thanks to the funding received, we will be able to develop a prototype that will help us detect metastasis early through a non-invasive technique such as liquid biopsy,” he adds.

With this project, UIC Barcelona reaffirms its commitment to biomedical research and the improvement of patients’ health, consolidating itself as a reference in the search for innovative solutions for the most prevalent diseases.

The UIC Barcelona Open Innovation | UICInnovació 2023 call is intended to finance projects for the valorisation of research results and has the participation of Banco Santander.
