Biodigital Architecture Innovation and Music at UIC Barcelona

Architects of the international avant-garde discuss biodigital architecture at UIC Barcelona

The University hosted the exhibition and conference Feedback. It’s About Time, in which renowned architects shared their latest projects with the students. They also performed a concert with biodigitally designed guitars.

Organised by Alberto T. Estévez, director of the Master’s Degree in Biodigital Architecture at UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, with Eric Goldemberg, from Florida International University, Feedback. It’s About Time brought together the biodigital work of 26 international architects. Over 13 monitors, the audience was able to see different biodigital architectural innovations. Each of the monitors displayed different avant-garde works of the invited architects.

The session featured lectures and a round table by Mariana Cabugueira, Carmelo Zappulla, Filippo Nassetti, Caterina Roppo, Josep Mias, Claudio Vekstein and Yomna K. Abdallah, along with the organisers, Alberto T. Estévez and Eric Goldemberg. During the presentations, the speakers established relationships between music and biodigital architecture: “We  can understand the composition of architecture and music in a similar way. In architecture, as in music, harmony, structure, rhythm, and a beginning and an end, are all needed, alongside where and how the architecture reaches toward the sky”, explained lecturer Alberto T. Estévez.

Throughout the day artist Seba Milonga performed Loop Experience, a small concert in which he played a 3D printed guitar and bass designed by architect Eric Goldemberg. These instruments were played with a looping technique in which several samples sounded repeatedly, intentionally and creatively.

To close the conference, lecturers Alberto T. Estévez and Yomna K. Abdallah gave the closing lecture titled The Open Crossing of Biodigital Design through AI. Accelerated Genetic Expression of Hybrids.

Students of the School of Architecture attended this conference organised by the Master in Biodigital Architecture and had the opportunity to enjoy the presentations of the invited architects, a concert with biodigital instruments and the final round table in which the aforementioned speakers participated.
