Data journalism, the focus of a debate in the Faculty of Communication Sciences

At the third edition of the Más Periodismo Event “data journalism” was discussed, journalism that is the result of a databank on the cloud which is growing larger and larger. The event, sponsored by Oracle, was opened by the journalist Jesús Escudero, from El Confidencial, one of the journalists who raised awareness of the “Panama papers”.

During the opening talk, entitled: “The value of data: managing leaks and big data”, the journalist Jesús Escudero started off by referring to the growing databank which we are saving on the cloud, a source that can be highly useful for today’s journalists: the question is to know how to use it.  Escudero also talked about his work at El Confidencial and about how it was all a question of the “Panama papers”.

Afterwards engineer and founder of OneTandem Víctor Pascual gave a talk called “More than a thousand words”. Pascual referred to the most technical part of big data.

Eli Vivas, a data journalist from El Periódico, Jaime Sierra, director of Infographics and Data Visualisation at La Vanguardia, Laura Aragón, data journalist, also at La Vanguardia; and Martín González, a journalist at Populate Tools and Politibot all participated in the round table entitled “Working with data: new competences of the journalist today”.  Each of the speakers started by describing their experiences and all of them agreed on the many open doors there are for people specialising in this field of communication today.

Finally, the last two talks were from one of our professors from the Faculty of Communication Sciences at UIC Barcelona, Marc Argemí, who talked about the experience of Big Data analysis in his company Sibilas, and from Isabel Fernández Peñuelas, director of the Digital Area at Oracle. Her talk was entitled: “Intelligent data-driven journalism: Trends and the future”.
