The Faculty of Dentistry performs Catalonia’s first implant surgery using an autonomous robot

The procedure, carried out on a real patient at the University Dental Clinic, marks the culmination of an intensive training programme on the use of the Yakebot robot for teaching staff and students in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery area

UIC's Faculty of Dentistry has performed Catalonia’s first implant surgery using Yakebot, the first autonomous CE-marked robot designed for dental implant placement. The procedure was carried out on a real patient at the University Dental Clinic following an intensive training programme delivered by the Yakebot team to teaching staff and students in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery area.

The robot autonomously performs the movements required for implant placement on the basis of a treatment plan previously defined by the surgeon and under the surgeon’s supervision. “We are pioneers in Catalonia and the first to perform this type of procedure here using the robot,” said Dr Federico Hernández Alfaro, head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery area.

Robotics applied to dental implantology

The introduction of robotics into oral and maxillofacial surgery opens up new possibilities for improving the precision and planning of implant procedures. In this regard, Dr Hernández Alfaro noted that, in the near future, “having this type of robot in clinics will make it possible to carry out a large proportion of the implant procedures currently performed by surgeons with complete precision and the same level of reliability”.

The researcher, who is included in Stanford University’s prestigious World Scientists: World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking, also pointed out that other potential applications of this technology in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery are currently being evaluated.

The incorporation of Yakebot into the Faculty of Dentistry and its University Dental Clinic reinforces the University’s commitment to academic excellence, research and the integration of technological advances into the clinical environment, with the aim of providing a distinctive educational experience that is aligned with the latest developments in dentistry and the evolving challenges of the profession.
