The importance of person-centred research and decision-making, keys to addressing the challenges of palliative care

Such was the insight of Cristina Monforte, co-director of the University’s WeCare Chair and globally renowned figure in the field of palliative care research, during her participation as a speaker at the 12th Argentine Palliative Care Congress, organised by the Argentine Association of Medicine and Palliative Care (AAMYCP)

The event, held from 5 to 8 November in San Luis (Argentina), brought together national and international experts to reflect on the current challenges of end-of-life care in academic sessions of great scientific significance.

Dr Monforte took part as a speaker in the opening plenary conference entitled “New Bioethical Challenges for Decision-Making in Our Time”, in which she addressed the ethical dilemmas inherent in contemporary clinical practice and the need to promote shared, person-centred decision-making.

The co-director of the WeCare Chair was also involved in the second plenary conference, “Quality Research in the Clinical Context of Palliative Care”, underscoring the importance of generating robust scientific evidence that contributes to improving palliative care and informing health policies built around quality and equity.

During the congress, Dr Monforte also participated in an expert meeting on training and leadership in interdisciplinary teams, where she shared her experience as an instructor, coordinator and manager of palliative care teams in diverse contexts. She also led the practical workshop "Wish to Hasten Death”, which explored this complex phenomenon from a clinical, psychological and ethical perspective.

Dr Monforte’s active involvement in the 12th Argentine Palliative Care Congress reasserts the WeCare Chair's commitment to promoting comprehensive, person-centred and evidence-based end-of-life care, further cementing its position as a leading international academic and scientific authority in the field of palliative care.
