The labyrinth of algorithms brings together fifty students at the Student Academic Conference

In this third edition of the Student Academic Conference (SAC), sixteen groups of students presented their projects within the framework of the theme “Caring for society in the age of artificial intelligence”. The lecturer of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) Sergi Robles closed the event with a lecture titled: “The Labyrinth of Algorithms: Perspectives on Generative AI Models”

On 2 March students from different faculties and universities met at UIC Barcelona to present the projects they had worked on since the opening of the SAC last October. Each group presented its work to the juries, formed by lecturers from various Catalan universities. There were sixteen papers in total, which covered a wide range of topics; from art made with AI to the application of AI in education or medicine.

The jury awarded first place to the “U Health” team, formed by Paula Figueras, Mònica Miquel and Elena Pocurull, first year students of Medicine at UIC Barcelona. Their proposal, an AI system for the preparation of medical diagnoses, impressed the jury with its originality and interdisciplinary nature.

Jordi Robles, computer engineer and UAB lecturer, closed the session with a presentation titled: “The Labyrinth of Algorithms: Perspectives on Generative AI Models.” During the session, Robles gave a detailed explanation of the “labyrinth of algorithms” which represents AI in his opinion, with the aim of understanding how it behaves and how to get the most out of it.

In this sense, Robles stressed that “ChatGPT is not useful to find information, but we must use it for exploration, never forgetting to be critical.” He also stressed the importance of knowing what words to use in the use of these tools to generate accurate answers and avoid errors.

The Student Academic Conference (SAC) is a university congress organised by UIC Barcelona, in which students have the opportunity to develop and present scientific works within the framework of a specific theme. On this occasion, students from UAB, UVic, UPF, UB and Abat Oliba University also participated, as well as a foreign university, University of Wales Trinity Saint David. This initiative offers a space for young talents to share their ideas and explore novel solutions to the challenges of today’s society.
