Nine UIC researchers among the world’s top 2% most influential scientists, according to the Stanford ranking

The presence of researchers from the faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences and Dentistry, as well as the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, in this international ranking highlights the University’s research talent and impact

A total of nine UIC researchers have been named among the world’s top 2% most influential scientists in the latest edition of the World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking, compiled by Stanford University in cooperation with Elsevier. This international distinction reflects the quality and growing prominence of UIC’s research across multiple areas of knowledge.

The list assesses researchers’ scientific impact based on indicators such as publications, citations, h-index and co-authorship and features scientists from 22 fields. The results are presented in two categories: one that analyses research impact in 2025 and another that recognises researchers’ impact over the course of their careers.

In the category corresponding to scientific impact over the past year, the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is represented by Román Pérez, full professor in the Department of Bioengineering, director of the Bioengineering Institute of Technology (BIT) and vice-rector for Research, Innovation and Knowledge Transfer; Ramon Grimalt, dermatologist and lecturer in the Department of Medicine; and Elena Valassi, researcher and lecturer specialising in endocrinology.

Representing the Faculty of Dentistry are José Nart, full professor and head of Periodontology; Federico Hernández-Alfaro, full professor and head of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Alberto Monje, lecturer and researcher in periodontology; Jordi Gargallo, lecturer and researcher in oral and maxillofacial surgery; and Francesc Abella, lecturer and director of the University Master’s Degree in Endodontics + Lifelong Learning Master’s Degree in Advanced Endodontics.

The ranking also features Lorenzo Chelleri, lecturer in the UIC Barcelona School of Architecture, director of the International Master’s Degree in City Resilience Design and Management and director of the Research Institute for Just and Resilient Carbon Neutral Places (JURECA).

In addition, Federico Hernández-Alfaro, Ramon Grimalt, Alberto Monje and Lorenzo Chelleri have also been named in the category assessing scientific impact over the course of their careers.

The inclusion of these nine researchers in a leading international ranking enhances UIC’s profile as a university committed to generating knowledge and illustrates the talent of its research teams in fields such as medicine, dentistry and architecture.
