A team of UIC Barcelona students wins the 4th University Entrepreneurship Fair with the ALSense project

Estel Gubianes and Estel Massip lead the multidisciplinary team ALSense, created with the aim of contributing to the early detection of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a neurodegenerative disease that affects motor neurons and for which there is currently no simple and effective diagnostic test.

ALSense, made up of 12 students from the Bachelor’s Degrees in Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, and Advertising and Public Relations at UIC Barcelona, was the winning project of the 4th University Entrepreneurship Fair organised by the University Entrepreneurship Network, held at Pompeu Fabra University.

The showcase followed a pitch combat format, in which representatives from the 12 Catalan universities presented emerging initiatives with high social and scientific impact. Third-year Biomedical Sciences student Estel Gubianes was responsible for presenting ALSense, a biosensor capable of detecting biomarkers associated with ALS using non-invasive samples.

For the project leaders, Estel Gubianes and Estel Massip, this recognition goes beyond the academic sphere. “Having innovation professionals and people unfamiliar with our field value the project so positively confirms that we are on the right track,” they explain. They also emphasise the fundamental role of the university in developing their skills, “From day one, we are trained to synthesise information, communicate complex projects and defend them clearly. These skills have been decisive.”

Participation in iGEM Paris

Recently, the team also took part in the international synthetic biology competition iGEM, held this year in Paris, where they won a bronze medal. During this experience, they had the opportunity to share their work with teams from around the world, exchange knowledge, and explore new perspectives in the field of synthetic biology.
