UIC Barcelona students present public space designs for those affected in La Palma

The students of the Master in International Cooperation in Sustainable Emergency Architecture (MICSEA) have worked on the design of public spaces together with those affected in La Palma. The population currently lives in metal containers of 60 m2, displaced by the Cumbre Viejo volcano.

Students of the Master in International Cooperation in Sustainable Emergency Architecture (MICSEA) of UIC Barcelona School of Architecture have presented three proposals for the design of public spaces for La Palma to the authorities. The presentation, which has received the support of the Cruz Roja and the City Council of Los Llanos de Aridane, was attended by Mr Javier Llamas, Mayor of Los Llanos de Aridane; Ms Tamara Acosta Vera, Councillor for Urbanism of Los Llanos de Aridane, and Ms Vanesa García, Ms Verónica Candelaria and Luis Carrasco, of the Cruz Roja.

The presentation workshop aimed to rebuild community life and make public spaces that facilitate coexistence available to residents displaced by the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. The students worked on three proposals for public spaces together with inhabitants of the island to ensure that the spaces are aligned with the culture, identity and traditions of those affected.

Participatory methodology

The process began with an initial diagnosis of the area where the containers in which the inhabitants reside are located. Subsequently, joint activities were conducted between students and displaced persons to understand their needs and desires.
Discussion groups, interviews and tours of the area were conducted to learn about their homes and public spaces before the eruption. This information was fundamental to design proposals that reflect their cultural identity.

Results of the workshop

The workshop ended with the presentation of three proposals for public spaces that address current gaps and at the same time reflect the aspirations of the community. The proposals included details on the activities that can be conducted in each space, the materials that are used and the phases of implementation.

Contribution to reconstruction

The UIC Barcelona initiative is a project that empowers the displaced community to participate actively in the reconstruction of their future. The proposals prepared will serve as a basis for future actions by public administrations and other entities involved in the recovery of La Palma.
