We study the phenomenon of the wish to hasten death (WTHD), as an extreme reaction to suffering at the end of life, from the individual perspective of the patients and those close to them. We aim to generate knowledge and offer solutions to the patients that are suffering, healthcare professionals and other members of society.  We do this using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.

The research objectives of the group are focused on:

  • Updating and improving methods for the detection and assessment of the wish to hasten death in clinical practice.
  • Existential suffering: how to address it in advanced patients.
  • Research in educating students and professionals in key aspects of the end of life.
