Introduction

The subject “Communication in Fashion and Trends” aims to train students to develop the necessary tools to gain fluency in the creation of journalistic and corporate communication texts, the most prominent being news, criticism, chronicles, and press releases. Communication is one of the fundamental pillars of the fashion industry. Understanding and communicating in an accessible way the craftsmanship behind this industry, its connection with the arts and culture, and how pieces are created is essential for the success of any brand. Beyond writing-related skills, students will gain basic knowledge of the sector and will learn to develop a critical eye to identify and analyze trends, as well as the functioning of the industry.

Studying fashion goes beyond patterns, fabrics, and colors that will be in style. Both on the streets and on red carpets, on social media and also in shop windows, the language of fashion anticipates social changes, concerns, and protests. Our task as journalists is to unravel each brand’s discourse and to be able to communicate it in a way that is understandable to society.

The course is organized around five modules, with three sessions dedicated to each, and each class divided into theory and practice. The first module focuses on the foundations of fashion journalism, the definition of this concept, its history, and the current media ecosystem. Once these concepts are consolidated, students will explore journalistic genres, the different types of language and writing styles, and how to structure each text according to its typology. The third module will highlight the cultural and social changes that fashion is experiencing today (such as the rise of AI and the importance of sustainability), while the fourth will focus on refining writing skills and learning how to edit texts. Finally, the fifth module will center on the final project, where students will be able to put into practice everything they have learned throughout the term.
