Introduction

The content of this subject will focus on scientific communications. We will work on the types of scientific communications that exist, and how to research them through different online platforms. The different parts of a scientific article will be discussed, as well as how to introduce the bibliography correctly. Finally, an explanation will be given on how to make an oral presentation for a scientific conference.

 

 

 

 

Pre-course requirements

There are no prerequisites.

Objectives

- To know the different types of scientific communication.

- To know and use the different online platforms to research scientific articles. 

- To have knowledge of the different parts and content of scientific articles.

- To know how to research specific data in scientific articles, journals and authors through the Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports and Scopus.

- To know how to cite the different types of scientific communication through Mendeley.

- To have the knowledge and ability to make an oral presentation of experimental results simulating a scientific conference.


 

 

 

Competencies

  • CB2 - Students must know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and have the competences that are demonstrated through the creation and defence of arguments and the resolution of problems within their field of study.
  • CB3 - Students must have the ability to bring together and interpret significant data (normally within their area of study) and to issue judgements that include a reflection on important issues that are social, scientific or ethical in nature.
  • CB4 - Students can transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • CB5 - Students have developed the necessary learning skills to undertake subsequent studies with a high degree of autonomy.
  • CE10 - To design fixed and removable structures for the application of prosthetics and orthotics.
  • CE12 - To undertake a professional project in the field of Bioengineering-specific technologies in which knowledge acquired through teaching is synthesised and incorporated.
  • CE15 - The ability to undertake a project through the use of data sources, the application of methodologies, research techniques and tools specific to Bioengineering, give a presentation and publicly defend it to a specialist audience in a way that demonstrates the acquisition of the competences and knowledge that are specific to this degree programme.
  • CE20 - To be capable of devising experimentation systems to measure the intrinsic physical and chemical properties of biological materials of human origin.
  • CE21 - The ability to understand and apply biotechnological methodologies and tools to research, as well as to the development and production of products and services.
  • CG1 - To undertake projects in the field of Bioengineering that aim to achieve a concept and a design, as well as manufacture prosthetics and orthotics that are specific to a certain pathology or need.
  • CT5 - To use information sources in a reliable manner. To manage the acquisition, structuring, analysis and visualisation of data and information in your specialist area and critically evaluate the results of this management.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course the student will be able to:

- Distinguish the different types of scientific communication as well as to research them through different online platforms.

- Know the content that should be included in each part of a scientific article.

- Know how to find specific data of interest in scientific articles, journals and authors through the Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports and Scopus.

- Be able to use Mendeley to cite references.

- Know how to organise an oral presentation to present experimental results as if it was a scientific conference.

  3. Scientific journals and their publication process.

  4. Parts and contents of a scientific article.

  5. Mendeley for citing references.

  6. Oral presentation at a scientific conference.

 

 

Teaching and learning activities

Online



Classes will be in online mode. The content of the subject will be given through theoretical and tutorial videos. With all the information provided, the students will be able to complete 4 assignments that will be submitted online.

In addition, individual tuition will take place to resolve doubts.


 

 

Evaluation systems and criteria

The assessment of this subject will be done through 4 assignments:

- Assignment 1 (20%)

- Assignment 2 (20%)

- Assignment 3 (25%)

- Assignment 4 + oral presentation (35%)

 

Important considerations:

- Plagiarism, copying or any other similar action will result in a zero for the assignment.

- The minimum mark to pass the subject is 5.

- No changes are accepted in the calendar for submission of assignments.

- Exchange students (Erasmus and others) are subject to the same conditions as other students.
