Introduction

It encompasses all clinical activities carried out at the University Dental Clinic. These activities are performed under the supervision of a professor and are aimed at acquiring the specific skills and competencies required for the master’s degree.

Care of paediatric patients at the University Dental Clinic (UDC), once the case has been assessed during the clinical session. The patient will be treated taking into account their specific characteristics at all levels: behaviour, family situation, type of dentition, and prognosis.

Pre-course requirements

Successful completion of preclinical laboratory training.

Objectives

Improve students’ clinical practice in conducting a thorough medical history and clinical examination of the patient, using complementary diagnostic examinations and being able to distinguish the most relevant information from that which is not.

The student will be able to systematically collect all relevant information in the patient’s medical record, while distinguishing the most relevant information from that which is not.

Apply knowledge to make an appropriate diagnosis, as well as to develop a suitable treatment and preventive plan for primary, mixed, and permanent dentition, applying different behaviour management techniques for paediatric patients.

Acquire the necessary skills to manage dental emergencies, as well as to prescribe appropriate medication when necessary.

In clinical cases of greater complexity that require the involvement of other specialties, treatment may be carried out jointly with students from other master’s programmes, whenever deemed appropriate by the professors responsible.

In cases where, in the opinion of the teaching staff, the patient’s clinical complexity (age, level of cooperation, indicated treatment, etc.) makes it advisable, the treatment may be assigned to another student.

Learning outcomes of the subject

  • - Scientific Evidence and Diagnosis in Pediatric Dentistry - Knowledge - CN01, CN02, Skills - HB01, HB09, HB11, HB13, HB14 and HB15 Competencies - CP01, CP05, CP02, CP04 - Students will be able to correctly use the scientific terminology related to oral pathology and restorative dentistry in pediatric patients. - Students will be able to make public presentations on clinical cases, with all the diagnostic details and complementary examinations required. - Students will be able to acquire the necessary knowledge to propose treatment plans referenced and justified by scientific literature. - Students will be able to correctly complete a pediatric dentistry medical history. - Students will be able to handle the different materials most commonly used in different pediatric dentistry treatments. - Students will be able to correctly perform absolute isolation with a rubber dam and acquire the manual skills necessary to perform the main preventive, restorative and pulp treatments. - Students will be able to perform dental treatment on pediatric patients with correct pain and behavior control. - Students will be able to diagnose the oral and dental pathology that the pediatric patient may present. - Students will be able to apply the necessary knowledge to diagnose and treat any type of dental trauma, whether in temporary or permanent dentition. - Students will be able to apply the necessary knowledge to diagnose and treat pulp pathology, whether in temporary or permanent dentition.

Teaching and learning activities

In person

Clinical practice supervised by a designated professor.

Clinical seminars.

Evaluation systems and criteria

In person

Continuous assessment throughout the academic year.

This course will assess various aspects, including the student’s attitude, manual dexterity and behaviour management skills, punctuality, active participation in sessions, ability to work as part of a team, thoroughness in completing assigned tasks, responsibility and commitment to learning, appropriate use of the uniform, as well as analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.

Attendance is compulsory:

  • Only absences due to serious illness, an accident and/or the death of a first- or second-degree relative will be considered justified.
  • In the event of unjustified absences, the clinical placements must be made up during the resit examination period.
  • If a student accumulates 3 unjustified absences, they will automatically fail the first assessment period, and these absences must be made up during the Online Master’s week or in the summer.
  • In the event of an absence, an email with the relevant supporting documentation must be sent to the professor responsible for the course, as well as to the Master’s director and coordinator.

Students must fully comply with the clinic’s regulations, which will be provided at the beginning of the academic year. These regulations establish the rules governing clinical placements, as well as the attendance and assessment criteria. Lack of knowledge of these regulations will not exempt students from complying with them.

Students are responsible for keeping their clinical requirements record safe and up to date. They must also request that the professor responsible validate and sign off each treatment performed, in accordance with the requirements established for the course.
