Introduction

The objective of this course is to help the student to form a criterion and, as Jaime Balmes affirms, "the criterion is a means to know the truth". Now, truth is not a prerogative of the intelligence, but something that concerns all human faculties: the truth of the understanding consists in seeing things as they are; the truth of the will consists in desiring them in an orderly manner, in conformity with the rules of ethics; and the truth of conduct or behavior consists in acting under the impulse of a good will. The criterion is an instrument that seeks the harmony of the whole man, without underestimating any of his faculties. Following, mainly, The Criterion of Jaime Balmes, we propose to offer an "integral logic", or better said, an "integral anthropology", capable of leading man, in all his dimensions (intelligence, will, passions...), towards the truth: "Here is the complete man, the man par excellence; in him reason gives light, imagination paints, the heart vivifies, religion divinizes".
