Funding for Culture
The objective of this course is to provide cultural managers with the necessary knowledge for financially managing cultural projects and institutions. It focuses especially on the management of cultural companies as well as publishing companies, museums and archives. It is aimed at professionals from different cultural industries.
Objectives
- To understand the different items of a profit and loss statement and a balance sheet.
- To know the meaning of different economic and financial ratios.
- To diagnose the economic and financial problems that a cultural institution may have.
- To know the characteristics of the main sources of financing the arts and culture, and their motivations for funding cultural projects.
- To set the funding needs of cultural projects and how they are related to the accomplishment of the organisational goals.
- To highlight the financial composition of the different cultural organizations according to their mission (public, not-for-profit or profit-oriented).
- To set the financing goals of the cultural organisations and projects.
- To know what strategies the organisations use to obtain funding for its projects.

Academic coordination
Naghieli Amarista
Degree in the History of Art specialising in Plastic Arts from the Central University of Venezuela (2006). Her thesis investigated the transformation of communication between the spectator and the work of art through digital interactivity and part of this research was published in the book “Estéticas del Media Art” (Aesthetics of Art Media) published by the EUMEDNET group of the University of Malaga. Master’s Degree in Cultural Management from the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (2014). She was a research assistant in the Communications Research Institute of the Central University of Venezuela (ININCO-UCV). She has worked as a cataloguing and archiving assistant at the Deposit Guarantee Fund and Bank Protection of Venezuela and has also been a manager and cultural communicator at SWAB Barcelona, the International Trade Fair for Contemporary Art.
Curriculum and subjects
The objective of this course is to provide students with the necessary tools for cultural management, with a specific focus on financial matters. To this effect, students create, execute and reconcile budgets and study the main aspects of outturn accounts, balance sheets and other important areas of finance within companies. Students also learn about the tools and main legislation that a cultural manager needs to be aware of, such as taxation, funding, contracts, etc.

Mohammed Elrazzaz (Egypt)
Mr. Elrazzaz holds a BA degree in Commerce / Economics (Cairo University), a diploma in Cultural Studies (University of Granada) and a Master’s in Arts & Cultural Management (UIC Barcelona). His career combines 10 years of expertise in the financial sector with 12 years of hands-on experience in the cultural field as the founder and mastermind of an active cultural community. He received the ifa-Stuttgart scholarship in the Mediterranean category in 2011, and he has worked since 2013 at the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
