You will attend lectures with international professionals such as Beatrice Burrows, from Tate Modern; Jasper Parrott, an international cultural manager, and Krzysztoff Zanussi, a Polish film director.


Academic year 2022-2023: 13th edition

The University Master’s Degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona is the only official Cultural Management programme in Spain taught entirely in English. Its eminently hands-on, international approach provides participants the tools necessary for working in the cultural sector.

This programme has welcomed students from six continents. The course content explores the processes required to offer cultural services and products from the perspective of entrepreneurship and leadership.

You will be taught by professionals from prominent national and international companies and projects. This will help make you a versatile, multidisciplinary professional capable of working in the realm of cultural policy, institutions and projects.

In addition to classes, the programme also includes visits to cultural facilities and institutions, as well as lectures and workshops led by national and international experts.


The UIC Barcelona gives you the tools you need to become a cultural manager.

The objectives of the master's degree programme include:

  1. To offer a reflection on the theory of culture in the 21st century and its social effects.
  2. To provide instruction about the characteristic features of local, national and international cultural policies.
  3. To teach students how to analyse a society's cultural fabric and prepare a diagnosis of needs and opportunities.
  4. To ensure students can apply management tools to the subjects of financing, financial management, human resources, marketing, communication, scheduling and production in relation to cultural events.
  5. To encourage the acquisition of personal entrepreneurial skills.
  6. To provide instruction about the specific management requirements of each cultural area.
  7. To teach students how to evaluate cultural projects and programmes.
  8. To introduce students to professional practice.
  9. To encourage a sense of social responsibility and ethical commitment.

Wendy Ramírez Simon

Society and Culture in the 21st century

Dr Wendy R. Simon holds a degree in Political Science by the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and a PhD in Contemporary Philosophy and Classical Studies by the Universitat de Barcelona. She is an associate professor at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya among others. She is also Executive Director of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona’s Journal of Catalan Intellectual History (JOCIH) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Anuari de la Societat Catalana de Filosofia of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (IEC). She is a member of the Institute of Law and Technology (IDT-UAB). Her lines of research include the democratic theoryModern political philosophy and the crisis of contemporary democracies.

Miguel López-Remiro Forcada

Society and Culture in the 21st Century

He is a graduate in Economy and he holds a PHD in Philosophy from the University of Navarra. He has an MBA from IESE and he is the first Spanish graduate from the Getty Leadership Institute in the Claremont University, Los Angeles.  Visiting Scholar and lecturer at University of California, San Diego. Collaborator of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Deputy Director of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and Founding Director of the Museum of Navarra. He is the editor, with worldwide rights, of the anthology of texts by Mark Rothko, Yale University Press and Flammarion. Lecturer in the area of Arts at the University of Navarra. Lecturer at ISEM business school where he is a researcher on creativity and Management. In parallel he pursues a career as consultant of independent art, economist of culture, artististic entrepreneur and curator of institutions and collections of high prestige

Nicolás Barbieri

Cultural Institutions and Policies. Cultural Project

Phd in Political Science and Graduated in Humanities by the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is professor tenure track at the International University of Catalonia and director of the Master in Cultural Management - in its English edition-. His research studies the analysis of political cultures, the cultural management and the cultural rights. He has been a visiting researcher in the Montpellier University, the National Avellaneda University and the National Three of February University. He has published books and articles in international magazines and he has contributed to the planification, implementation and evaluation of cultural politics and projects. He is the author of the blog

Diane Dood

Cultural Institutions and Policies

Diane Dodd is President of IGCAT (International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism) and co-founder of the European Region of Gastronomy Award that has grown into a World Region of Gastronomy Platform. She is also Regional Adviser for the global network IFACCA (International Federation of Arts Councils and Cultural Agencies). She has been an independent evaluator for the Cultural Routes programme of the Council of Europe and editor of a number of Cultural Policy and Cultural Management publications for the European Cultural Foundation (ECF). She provided expert advice to Plovdiv and Valletta in the preparation for their respective bids to be European Capital of Culture. Diane has worked in the cultural policy and management field for over 20 years and maintains relations with a number of important Global and European Institutions including UNWTO, UNESCO, European Commission, OEI, Commonwealth, Asia-Europe Foundation and many others. She obtained her PhD from the University of Girona in 2010.

Mohammed Hassan Elrazzaz Elrazza

Tools for Managing Culture. Funding for Culture. Cultural Project

Mr Elrazzaz holds a BA degree in Commerce / Economics (Cairo University), a diploma in Cultural Studies (University of Granada) and a Master’s in Arts & Cultural Management (UIC Barcelona). His career combines 10 years of expertise in the financial sector with 12 years of hands-on experience in the cultural field as the founder and mastermind of an active cultural community. He received the ifa-Stuttgart scholarship in the Mediterranean category in 2011. Since 2013, he has worked at the Secretary of the Union for the Mediterranean (UIM) as Coordinator of Regional Integration. His book ‘The Mediterranean: A Shared Heritage’ was published by EMUNI in 2017.

Christoph Pasour

Cultural Marketing. Audiovisual Industry Management. Cultural Project

Mr Pasour is a TV Producer. He holds a degree in Art History and Media Studies from the Freie Universität Berlin (Germany) and also Edinburgh University (UK). He has authored articles for newspapers and magazines on media art and cinematography. He was the project manager and curator at the Museum for Cinematography in Potsdam, Germany; commissioning Editor in the film department of the 3sat cultural television channel (Germany/Austria/Switzerland). He has also been involved in script development (fiction/non-fiction) for production companies in Berlin and Hamburg. He has been a producer/author on documentaries since 2005 for production companies in Berlin, Hamburg and Barcelona for broadcasters such as ARTE, 3sat, ARD, ZDF, RAI, YLE, TV3.

Paula Salinas Peña

Funding for Culture

PhD in Economics by the University of Barcelona and master by the University College of London (CL). Co-founder and director of Knowledge Sharing Network (KSNET), a company focused on transferring the knowledge of social politics and economics. She has worked as a researcher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and BGSE, at the Institute of Economy of Barcelona, at the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Deputation of Barcelona. Her main areas of research are the economy of the public sector and the evaluation of public politics.

Sandy Fitzgerald

Funding for Culture

Sandy has over forty-years´ experience in the cultural sector, including: Executive Director of City Arts Centre, Dublin (1973 to 2001), board member of the Royal Hospital National Cultural Centre (1985 – 1990), later to become the Irish Museum of Modern Art; board member of the Dublin Film Festival (1988 - 1993); Executive Committee Member of Trans Europe Halles, the European network of Independent Cultural Centres (1997-2002). Currently Sandy is a co-director of Olivearte Cultural Agency delivering training, consultancy and project management across Europe.

Marc Simón Altaba

With publications in international and Spanish magazines specialized in Intellectual Property, like the International Review of Intellectual and Competition Law, or Pe. Magazine of Intellectual Property. Author of book chapters ("The right to transform and new technologies" in the book "Commercial Law and Technology" by Aranzadi Editorial; "Transformation of pieces of intellectual property and trademark law" for the book "Industrial Property Yearbook" by Tirant editorial) and of the monography "The musical creation and copyright" by the international editorial Juruá, among others. In the teaching field, previous to his incorporation to UIC, he has been an associate professor in UPF, the University of Barcelona, UNIR and ESIC. He has professional experience as a lawyer in intellectual and industrial copyright, and competition law.

Amilcar Vargas

Legal Aspects of Museums, Foundations and Cultural Institutions

Amilcar Vargas holds a PhD from the University of Barcelona and is responsible for World Heritage at Casa Batlló. His main task is the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, raising awareness of the Outstanding Universal Value and pursuing the potential opportunities of Casa Batlló's inscription on the UNESCO List. He is an international expert in World Heritage Management. His international experience includes academic stays in Canada, Germany and Mexico, conference presentations in 13 countries and several publications. He is a member of international professional associations such as ICOMOS and ICOM, among others.

Inés Martínez Ribas

Cultural Communication and Information. Cultural Project

Writer, reporter and sociologist. She studied at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the University of East London (UEL) and the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM). She graduated in Political Sciences and Sociology (UAB and UEL) and Sciences of Information (UAB) and she studied a Master in Journalism El País (UAM). She has worked as editor in newspapers such as El País, La Vanguardia and El Periódico; she was the press and protocol manager in institutions like ‘La Caixa’ Foundation and The Contemporary Art Museum of Barcelona (MACBA), and she has written many articles. She works as a communications consultant. ‘Caribdis. En mar de nadie’’ (Ed. Distrito 93, 2020), her first novel, was finalist in the III August Dupin Contest Black Novel 2020.

Alfonso Gironza Marqués

Creation of Cultural Companies

Alfonso Gironza holds a degree in Industrial Engineering from the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering-UPC (1999). He has a Master's Degree in Company Quality Management from the Fundació Politècnica de Catalunya-UPC (2005) and an Executive Master's Degree in Business Administration EMBA-IESE Barcelona (2010). Since 2005, he has been a management consultant for industrial services enterprises. From 2003 to 2009, he worked as an internal consultant at IBM Global Services and, from 2000 to 2003, as a project manager at Deutsche Bank.

Mariano Martín Zamorano

Leadership, Culture and New Technologies

Mariano Martín Zamorano holds a PhD in Culture and Heritage Management from the University of Barcelona (UB). Zamorano specializes in public cultural policies and has several publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, books and book chapters. Throughout his career, he has obtained four individual research grants. He also has more than 15 years of experience coordinating and developing scientific projects, participating in more than 20 funded scientific investigations by institutions such as the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) or the European Commission (H2020). Zamorano has been Visiting Scholar at the Ohio State University, and is Associate Professor at the Open University of Catalunya and a Postdoctoral fellow at the UB.

Esther Belvis

Leadership, Culture and New Technologies

Esther majored in Pedagogy by the Autonomous University of Barcelona and she obtained her PhD in Theater and Performing Arts by the University of Warwick (UK). Nowadays, Esther is the director and cofounder of The Social Vim Collective, a creative study that develops projects with social impact for the cultural, educatie, environmental and humanitarian sector, for organizations like Telefónica Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Un or ‘La Caixa’ Foundation, among others.

Conxa Rodà de Llanza

Leadership, Culture and New Technologies

Philology. Over the past 20 years she has worked in media, publishing and web architecture. She was the media director at the Culture Institute of Barcelona. She was head of projects at the Picasso Museum between 2006 and 2011 and later director of strategy, innovation and digital transformation at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya in Barcelona from 2012 to 2019. She teaches on the Museum Management programme at the PyPA Foundation in Buenos Aires, Argentina (2013-2016).  She set up and co-directed the postgraduate course in Museum Management at the Pompeu Fabra University (2012-2015) and currently do-directs the Course on specialization in digital strategy in cultural organisations, which is run by the UOC (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya) and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (2016-2020). She is a member of the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council and the jury for the Best of the Web award from the conference Museums and the Web (2009-2020).

Jordi Padró

Cultural Heritage Management

Holder of an undergraduate degree in Geography and History from the University of Barcelona. Consultant in the fields of heritage, museology and cultural tourism. Founder and director of Stoa, a consultancy firm specialising in heritage, museology and cultural tourism. Lecturer in a number of courses, university postgraduate degrees and seminars on cultural and tourism management and local development. Institutional advisor on cultural and tourism policies, museum programming and production, territorial projects aimed at promoting and educating about cultural and natural resources.

Manel Miró

Cultural Heritage Management

Graduated in 1985 in Prehistory, Old History and Archaeology from the University of Barcelona. FreelanceI archaeologist from 1989 to 1992. Specialized in 1990 in patrimonial management by the School of Heritage of Barcelona. Since 1998, he is the main consulting àrtner of the Area of Interpretation and Museographic Projects in Stoa. He has directed more than a hundred projects in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Peru. Lecturer and professor in more than 15 Spanish and Latin American universities. He has published articles about interpreting heritage and museology in different university magazines and he’s the author of the cultural heritage blog ‘Raining Stones’.

Ainhoa González Graupera

Visual Arts Management

Holder of an undergraduate degree in Art History and a Master’s Degree in Museum Studies and Cultural Heritage Management from the University of Barcelona. She has taken courses as part of a PhD in Art History, Theory and Criticism and earned an Advanced Studies Degree. From 2004 to 2016, she worked at MACBA as an assistant curator. She has also worked for companies specialising in the transport of works of art and exhibition assembly and collaborated with galleries and artists.

Antonia María Perelló

Management and Curation of Artistic and Cultural Heritage Exhibitions

She has a PhD in History of Art from the University of Barcelona and currently works as a conservator and collections manager at the MACBA. She used to be an exhibitions conservator for Barcelona City Council and taught on the master's degree in Cultural Heritage Management and Museology at the University of Barcelona.  From 2007 to 2017, she lectured on Visual Arts Management as part of the master's degree in Arts and Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona, where she is currently responsible for the subject “Curation Management and Exhibitions”. She has given classes and talks at a range of universities in Spain and abroad, taken part in round table discussions and formed part of artistic juries and academic tribunals. She has curated exhibitions at the MACBA and has held her own touring exhibitions. Her exhibition Doneu-vos la mà i pugeu a l’infern (Shake hands and climb into hell), and the accompanying book, won her the ACCA Research Prize in 2017. She has written books and research articles and regularly contributes to specialised committees on markets and heritage at public Catalan institutions.

Valerie Miles

Publishing Industry Management

Valerie Miles, writer, editor and translator, was born in the United States and currently lives in Barcelona. She co-founded British magazine Granta’s Spanish-language project in 2003 whilst managing the publishing house Emecé, part of Grupo Planeta, in Spain. She also established the New York Review of Books’ (NYRB) contemporary classics series in Spanish during her time as associate director of Alfaguara. She has written pieces for The New Yorker, The New York Times, El País, La Nación, The Paris Review and Granta, among other publications.  She is currently a Fellow of the National Endowment for the Arts in the United States for her translation of Crematorio by Rafael Chirbes, soon to be published by New Directions, for whom she has also translated works by Enrique Vila-Matas.  Her co-translation and extended edition of Juan Eduardo Cirlot's Diccionario de símbolos (A Dictionary of Symbols) will be published by the New York Review of Books in 2020. Her translation of Esto también pasará (This too shall pass) by Milena Busquets was selected as a finalist for the Impac Prize in 2016, as well as receiving the PEN Translation Prize.  Her most recent publication from Yale University Press is a study of Nobakov by Azar Nafisi, which gave rise to the author’s best-seller, Reading Lolita in Tehran.  Valerie curated the exhibition Bolaño Archive. 1977-2003 at the CCCB in Barcelona, the fruits of extensive research into the writer’s private archives.  She is currently involved in the publication and translation of Borges, Adolfo Bioy Casares' monumental memoirs, for the NYRB. Her first book, A Thousand Forests in One Acorn presents a collection of conversations with some of the twentieth century’s most important writers. It was first published in English and later translated into Spanish under the title Mil bosques en una bellota. She a member of Malba Writers Residence’s honorary committee in Buenos Aires, alongside John M. Coetzee, Soledad Costantini, Christian Lund and Jorge Monteleone, and she was named one of the “most influential professionals in publishing” by the El Libro Foundation in Argentina.

Pepe Zapata

Performing Arts Management

Expert in public culture. Pepe Zapata is currently managing the TRESC, Community of Culture, the most important organization of cultural management for intensive users in Catalonia. He has been the Communication, Marketing and Publics Director at the Focus Group, Partner and Consultor of Teknecultura, Marketing and Communication Director at The Flowers Market, Coordinator of Alicia Foundation (science and alimentation) and cultural manager at Pompeu Fabra University. He is a usual teacher and speaker in different master and postgraduate programs related to cultural management, public management, marketing and communication.

José María Sanchis

Performing Arts Management

Jose Maria Sanchis Perales was born in Valencia. He holds a degree in Law from the University of Barcelona, is specialised in international relations and spent three years preparing for the annual national examinations at the Diplomatic Corps.  He has been working in the cultural sector since 1998, first at the CCCB in Barcelona and from 1999 at L’Auditori in Barcelona in the technical department. From 2003, he was head of production for Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and worked on productions for Sonar Festival, Primavera Sound and Peralada Festival, among others. He lectures on the master’s degree in Management and Musical Production at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, as well as teaching Performing Arts Management at UIC Barcelona. He also regularly collaborates with different educational institutions such as the IESE Business School, Blanquerna, Pompeu Fabra University, the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the University of Deusto.

Mónica Amor

Audiovisual Industry Management

Ms Amor is an executive with 15 years experience in the media. She has an MBA from the San Pablo CEU University of Madrid, a Master’s in Audiovisual Production and a degree in Media Business from the Complutense University of Madrid. She is currently the Account and Company Services Manager at TV3, the Catalan TV network. Prior to this she was Account Manager in Activa Multimèdia Digital in charge of various commercial projects. She was the Producer for documentaries and reports on Canal Natura, and was a Production Coordinator for the Walt Disney Company. She undertook her traineeship in News Production in Canal +, TVE and TVG (Galician Television).

UIC Barcelona has a wide-ranging work experience programme which covers more than 270 cultural institutions and companies in Barcelona, Spain, and other parts of the world. They have very interesting profiles including small and large companies from all cultural sectors.

The objectives of the work experience are:

  1. To understand how entities or companies that offer products or cultural services work.
  2. To understand the overall process of a cultural product or service.
  3. To join a team and learn the dynamics of the company or institution.
  4. To manage an aspect or part of the project or service according to predetermined targets.
  5. To analyze and reflect on work experience, and make a critical assessment of the work carried out.


Internships are one of the cornerstones of the curriculum in the Master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Management. They allow students to temporarily work for a company or cultural institution while applying the knowledge acquired throughout the academic year and while developing the professional competences which are specific to cultural managers.

This compulsory work experience is awarded with 12 ECTS and is equivalent to around 250 / 300 hours of work to be carried out during the academic year or the summer holiday. The internships’ coordinator will supervise that the work plan be related to the Master’s objectives and that the students acquire the learning outcomes related to cultural management. At the end of this period students will present a report which will contain a description of the work they undertook as well as a critical evaluation of their own performances.

It is highly recommended that the student have a B2 level of Spanish in order to guarantee a good internship experience in Spain. Students will have to take a Spanish test and according to their level the university will suggest the appropriate course. This service is available at the UIC Barcelona. The level of Spanish is not mandatory but it may delay the search process.

Master's Degree

  1. What are ECTS credits?
    ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) credits are the units used to quantify all the activities the students carry out during the learning process: theoretical and practical class hours, study hours, seminars, homework, work experience and projects, exam preparation and exams or other tests. Each ECTS credit is equal to 25 hours of work.

  2. What is an Official Master’s Degree?
    An Official Master’s Degree is a postgraduate qualification that is valid throughout Spain and in all European Union countries that are part of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). To gain access, participants must hold an undergraduate degree, diploma or equivalent or bachelor’s degree awarded under the new higher education system. 
    The University Master’s Degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona is an official postgraduate qualification that has been adapted to European Higher Education Area regulations and whose quality has been evaluated by the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU Catalunya) and the Spanish National Evaluation Agency for Quality and Accreditation (ANECA).

  3. What is the difference between the Master’s and postgraduate degrees in Cultural Management, Museum and Cultural Heritage Management and Cultural Industry Management?
    The University Master’s Degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona has a heavier course load and workload. As a result, it provides a more comprehensive overview of cultural management and also includes a Final Master’s Degree Project and work experience. 
    The postgraduate degrees, thanks to their reduced format, are a great option for people who work and study or who are taking other courses. They are intended for students with a bachelor's degree, undergraduate degree or diploma, who are currently working and who wish to further their knowledge of key aspects of cultural management. The subjects that make up the curricula of the various postgraduate degrees are also part of the Master’s Degree curriculum. 
    The University Master's Degree in Cultural Management at UIC Barcelona is an official postgraduate qualification adapted to the regulations of the European Higher Education Area. Postgraduate degrees are, throughout the EU, specific to the universities that teach them.

  4. Is work placement compulsory? Can I have my professional experience recognised?
    Work experience is one of the pillars of the University Master’s Degree in Cultural Management’s curriculum, as it facilitates students’ integration into a company or cultural institution, enables them to apply the knowledge they acquire during the academic year and helps them develop the professional competences required of a cultural manager. 
    Work placement is compulsory. It is worth 12 credits and is equivalent to approximately 250 / 300 practical hours, which may be completed during the academic year or over the summer (before the end of November). In Spain, work placement is usually unpaid.

  5. Do I need to speak Spanish or Catalan to do work placement in Catalonia?
    The official languages of Catalonia are Catalan and Spanish, though the vehicular language of public institutions is primarily Catalan. UIC Barcelona recommends that you have knowledge of and learn both languages. Students interested in doing work placement in Catalonia must acquire at least a B2 level of Spanish between October and January of the year they take the Master’s Degree. Otherwise, the coordinators of the University Master’s Degree in Cultural Management will be unable to guarantee you a work placement agreement in Catalonia.
    UIC Barcelona, through the Institute for Multilingualism, offers both on-site and online Spanish and Catalan courses outside the Master’s Degree timetable.

  6. If I enrol in the Spanish edition of the Master’s Degree, can I still choose optional subjects from the Master’s Degree in English and vice versa?
    Students may choose three optional subjects, regardless of whether they correspond to the Spanish or English edition. These subjects may not be chosen in the event they occur on the same date and time.
