Agreement with UC Berkeley Summer Sessions for UIC Barcelona students

The University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) is rated the number one public university by the world’s most prestigious rankings. UIC Barcelona is the first UC Berkeley Summer Sessions partner in Spain and part of its network of global partners.

Through this programme, the students selected from among all faculties at UIC Barcelona may take summer courses and enjoy the following benefits:

  • Academic recognition in most cases (check with your faculty). Upon completing the course, UC Berkeley will issue an official transcript of records, and the courses will be transferred to the student’s academic record at UIC Barcelona.
  • Guidance and support throughout the application and enrolment process.
  • Priority enrolment in the UC Berkeley Summer Sessions before registration opens to the general public.
  • Eligible for a $500 International Service Fee waiver.
  • Three €2,000 grants for the top applicants.

About UC Berkeley

Berkeley is in northern California in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is an urban metropolis surrounded by water and nature and known for being a global hub of innovation, culture and world-class recreation.

The Berkeley campus is centrally located in the heart of downtown Berkeley within walking distance of shops, cafes and restaurants, as well as scenic hiking trails. 

Public transportation is accessible throughout the Bay Area, and you can hop on the subway in Berkeley and be in downtown San Francisco in just about 20 minutes. 

Berkeley is also in close proximity to Silicon Valley, the epicentre for advances in technology and product development. As well as countless other popular destinations, including the Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, beautiful wine country in Napa Valley and Sonoma County, redwood forests, mountains and beaches. You could even take a short flight to Los Angeles, Las Vegas or other parts of the United States. 

Programme description

  • The UC Berkeley Summer Sessions ( BSS) run from late May to mid-August and have a duration of 3 to 12 weeks, depending on the programme.
  • Students will take between 10–16 ECTS (depending on the number of weeks) at Berkeley. Each American unit/credit is worth 2 ECTS.
  • As many as 600 courses in 80 disciplines are available. Click here to see the full course list.
  • All classes are taught in English. Specialised English courses are also available: Summer English Language Studies.
  • UIC Barcelona students enrolled in BSS study alongside Berkeley students as well as visiting students from around the world.
  • This experience is also available to UIC Barcelona double-degree students, who typically have fewer mobility options.

Eligibility requirements

  • Students may only participate from year two onwards.
  • An excellent academic record.
  • At least a B2 level of English (click here for information on language requirements).
  • Compliance with the regulations of each faculty.
  • Once selected by UIC Barcelona, each student must register directly via UC Berkeley’s online platform. Final acceptance is subject to the correct handling of all required procedures, including the student visa.

     

Cost

  • Students will enrol in the Summer Sessions and pay the academic fees directly to UC Berkeley. Click here to see the cost of each course.
  • Students must pay 10% of the credit charge for each subject they wish to validate and recognise as equivalent on their academic record at UIC Barcelona.
  • Students must bear in mind that tuition does not include travel/visa expenses, housing expenses, etc.
     

Housing

Housing is not included in the cost of tuition and is the responsibility of each student. UC Berkeley offers multiple housing options. For more information, click here.

Students are advised to book housing upon enrolling, due to the high demand.

 

Visa

As a visiting international student, you will need an F-1 student visa to enter the United States and attend the Berkeley Summer Sessions.

Full-time enrolment is mandatory for international visiting students who wish to obtain the I-20 (F-1).

Mobility and grants call

Each year, the International Relations Service launches a specific mobility call for this programme, where you will find all information on the process, deadlines, grants and eligibility requirements for this unique academic experience.

The process is as follows:

  1. Application submission:
    If you are interested in experiencing an international academic summer, you must complete the form and submit the required documentation before the deadline.
     
  2. Faculty assessment: 
    The faculties will conduct an initial evaluation to select students who meet the programme’s requirements.
     
  3. Publication of the decision:
    The International Relations Service will announce the final list of admitted students and the recipients of the three UC Berkeley grants, awarded to the top three applicants.
