Rubén de la Prida presents his book The Ten Commandments of Martin Scorsese

Rubén de la Prida, lecturer of the Faculty of Communication Sciences at UIC Barcelona, presented his book The Ten Commandments by Martin Scorsese at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, in an event for cinephiles but also for those who want to learn more about the filmography of the American director

Rubén de la Prida holds a PhD in Audiovisual Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, as well as a Master in Film Criticism from ECAM. Since 2024, he has been working as a lecturer at UIC Barcelona, teaching Audiovisual Analysis and Research in the Advertising and Public Relations Bachelor’s Degree, and Creativity and Innovation in Journalism. Published by Alianza, he presented his book The Ten Commandments by Martin Scorsese at the Biblioteca del Cinema of the Filmoteca de Catalunya.

In the book, Rubén de la Prida presents an original look at the universe of Martin Scorsese in ten chapters, combining rigour and clarity. Both for fans of the director and for those who are just discovering his work, the book is an introduction to life and work, with a focus on high level dissemination, delving into his successes and his failures.

“I have always been fascinated by Scorsese’s cinema and the anthropological depth of his films,” explains Rubén de la Prida, who decided to present the book as a list of commandments.  “In the book, I analyse the tension between the Law of God and the law of the street, which runs through all of Scorsese’s work and leads him  to wonder how to obey these commandments today,” added the UIC Barcelona lecturer.

In addition to talking about the content of his films, the book also reviews the aesthetics of his work. “Scorsese has invented resources of cinematographic language that didn’t exist before him, at an audiovisual and audio level,” explains the author. “He was the first to create a soundtrack for a feature film with pre-existing songs, and he was also a pioneer in using the combination of a travelling shot with slow motion and music overlay,” he adds.

Guilt, violence, redemption or lies are just some of the aspects of Scorsese’s films that the writer delves into. The author of the prologue, José Luis Sánchez de Noriega, stresses that the book is exactly what a film book should be: “Good books about filmmakers immediately invite you to review their work, to see the films again with a new vision, more creative and insightful, to discover the murkier facets of the characters,” he explains.

To facilitate this review of Martin Scorsese’s work, Rubén de la Prida has included an annex with a QR code where the reader can view thirty scenes mentioned in the book. A 21st century tool for discovering Raging Bull, The Irishman or Taxi Driver, classic films now revisited in The Ten Commandments of Martin Scorsese.
