UIC Barcelona researchers share advances in palliative care at SECPAL 2025 Congress

Members of the WeCare Chair and the Cuides UIC Barcelona clinic took part in the latest edition of the Spanish Society for Palliative Care (SECPAL) Congress, where they presented several poster communications and showcased UIC Barcelona’s academic and clinical programmes in the field of palliative care

A team of researchers from the WeCare Chair at UIC Barcelona and professionals from the Cuides UIC Barcelona clinic actively participated in the SECPAL 2025 Congress, held in Zaragoza on 26 and 27 September. The event, organised jointly with the Aragonese Society for Palliative Care (CUSIRAR), brought together more than 700 experts under the theme “The interdisciplinary team: the cornerstone of palliative care”.

The WeCare Chair was represented by its co-director, Cristina Monforte, alongside researchers Iris Crespo, Andrea Rodríguez, Aleix Bonfill, Aina Garcia, Raquel Ibáñez and Cristina Brugués. Also in attendance were María Jimeno, physician at the Cuides UIC Barcelona clinic, together with Belén Bofill, Anna Alarcón and Ingrid Ramo, professionals and researchers from EAPS Cuides UIC Barcelona. During the congress, UIC Barcelona also hosted an information stand featuring its course Assessment and Response to the Wish to Hasten Death in People with Advanced Disease, the University Master’s Degree in Palliative and Supportive Care, and the services offered by the Cuides UIC Barcelona clinic.

UIC Barcelona’s participation in the congress reflected the university’s commitment to research and innovation in palliative care, through the presentation of various posters addressing key issues for progress in both clinical and academic settings.

The presence of the WeCare Chair and the Cuides UIC Barcelona clinic at the event highlighted UIC Barcelona’s role as a benchmark in training healthcare professionals and developing applied knowledge in the field of palliative care.

As Cristina Monforte, co-director of the WeCare Chair, noted: “Forums such as the SECPAL Congress provide momentum to continue advancing research and clinical practice in palliative care, with the aim of improving care and quality of life for people with advanced illness and their families.”
